Default Perth vs Vancouver, Canada

Hi,

Does anyone have any experience of living in both Perth and in Vancouver, Canada ? It's just that we've now visited, and loved, both and are having great difficulty in deciding which city/country would be the best to move to.

Any comments would be welcome.

I'm actually moving from Vancouver to Sydney.

I think its easier to immigrate to Canada than Australia, but I'm not sure.

Vancouver is beautiful.

I'm moving to Sydney for business reasons, but Sydney is also a very beautiful city as well. So its a win-win situation for me!

I lived in Perth for about 9 months. While the weather is nice albeit a
little hot for me most of the year, it is really just a small mining town
posing as a city out in the middle of nowhere. The macho Ozzie is very much
alive and well in WA. My wife experienced the worst sexism she had
experienced anywhere in the world and it is one of only two places in the
world where I have had someone attempt to mug me - maybe I have a little
bias? There is great diving in many areas, but to get anywhere out of Perth
takes a long time and a lot of money. Internal flights are expensive and it
takes days to get to the east coast by car. IMHO a nice place to visit,
but...

I have not lived in Vancouver, but visited there regularly over the last ten
years or more and IMHO it is a far nicer place even if it has deteriorated a
bit since I first visited - too many bloody immigrants! Obviously a
little wetter and cooler than Perth, but with both mountains and sea on your
doorstep you do get variety. Vancouver also suffers a little from being
isolated, but the large influx of immigrants and a natural friendliness of
most Canadians makes it a nicer place (all my own opinion of course).
Seattle is not very far away and quite different in nature. I've personally
gone off Vancouver itself in recent times and am looking at other parts of
BC to live, but I would still rate it better than most, if not all, places I
have spent any time.

On another posting is the results of a survey that puts Vancouver as the
best place to live, equal with Melbourne. Perth comes second, London 44th.

It you can afford it, I would go and live for an extended period in both -
you have 6 months on a tourist visa - this should help you decide and who
wouldn't like a year off? :-)

-Terry
