I would select melbourne, but I am not a welder,
From last years statistic, melbourne/Vic was second most favorite destination for migrants,
But I hear up until the financial crisis Perth is the place for those who are engaged in construction industry, but now things have changed and there are'nt much , However if you are planning to land in OZ by end of 2010, things should be looking good for folks in construction occupation

I am biased because I live in Melbourne and love it.

Things are getting a little tight for jobs in Melbourne at the minute and from what I have read on forums its bad in Perth. However Melbourne is a much larger city with a population getting up to four million so of course there are more opportunities here.

Also there is infrastructure building being undertaken which will provide jobs once the work starts.

Victoria has several cities such as Ballarat, Bendigo, and Portland where the Alcoa plant is.

Or less opportunities if there isn't enough work for so many people :)
