Re: Perth Vs Brisbane

I think the hardest thing about getting an IT job in many cities in Australia is the need for local contacts.

Many people are employed by word of mouth. My boss always asks whether we know anyone who would be suitable for any position he is trying to fill.

Same at last place. A lot of people are employed this way and only when none of us can come up with anyone good do they advertise.

Recently offered role in UK about £120 per hour (Unable to compare London to regional areas as have not investigated those areas)

What difference are you seeing in Oz v UK Rates?

UK rates are plummeting, contractors going perm. £120 per hour is very good in the current climate. What type of role was this for?

Always the case. The last thing a company wants to do is waste money on advertising or, God forbid, agencies.

The problem is that most people don't want to live in the middle of nowhere. Getting work in the CBD is far more competitive.

Obtaining work in the CBD is going to be more difficult because it has a population of 1m+ thus greater competition. The difference between Queensland and WA and other states is that Queensland has various hubs - you do not need to live nor work in the CBD to survive.

Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns all have self sufficient economies with ample job opportunities across many industries. Then of course we have the mining communities.

Overall, everywhere is generally safe in Australia. Definitely safer than the UK. Only Brisbane has been reknowned for assaults in the CBD Fri and Sat nights. Same problem in Melb at the moment.

Might be worth you reading some recent threads on here about crime in Aus if thats what you truly believe........

Dave,
Are you talking about only IT opportunities or all kinds of job opportunities. I guess IT is only in Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Well I'm sure IT opportunities are in even the smallest of councils , IT is really everywhere. And working for a council has definite advantages too !

In general I was talking about all industries as dean said unemployment in Bris/Qld was traditionaly higher than the rest of the country however, you could find IT roles anywhere. As scamp has said there are plenty of regional super councils that have large IT areas, plus there are large corporates that have regional head offices in the areas i mentioned.
