Perth v Sydney - tell me wich we should choose and why?
I know this is a ridiculous thread. For Security with jobs we should head to Sydney (perhaps!).
My hustband is keen on Perth but we have not been there for 15 years. When we visited Ocean Reef it was lovely.
So...........
pros and cons of Perth and Sydney for a family with teenagers really appreciated
I am a teacher, husband is a fire fighter (no trade other than this)
Daughter wants to go to Uni in a year ago. Son lives for rugby and friends.
THANK YOU
Tara

Here are some analogous cities:
Sydney = London
Perth = Cardiff
Brisbane = Marseilles
Melbourne = Paris
Darwin = Tangiers
Hobart: Helsinki

I don't live in either but have visited both and I can say that they are very different. It really depends what you are looking for but if it's rugby, I wouldn't recommend Melbourne

Talk about two complete oposites!
We live in Perth and have visited Sydney and found it to be vibrant, noisy and a bit grimy (sorry to any Sydneysiders!) but that's big cities for you. If you want buzz and excitement then Sydney is the place to head for but if you want a more sedate lifestle, then head for Perth.
I am at Uni studying to become a teacher. There are a few Uni's over here, I attend ECU and find it excellent. Teaching positions...if you have some sort of religious training then you will be fine, as there are always jobs in private schools. Take a look in The West Australian online.
Sports: everyone is bonkers about sport over here. The climate allows for it most of the year.
Good luck.

Sydney is a great place, busy and vibrant city with loads going on. It is also a very scenic city and loads of great places to go in the surrounding area. We had a ball there and love it very much.
We have been in Perth for 6 months now and like the more laid back pace here. The weather is less humid in the heat, so although it is not as hot in Sydney, we found Sydney nearly unbearable in Jan, where Perth is not quite so bad. It depends how you are with the heat/humidity.
Housing is cheaper in Perth, but growing rapidly. To live the same distance from the city (in time travelled etc) is significantly different between the 2.
Perth is a lot smaller in population and very remote. I think it is around 1.2-1.4M where Sydney & Melb are both over 7M. So although Perth is a city larger than Birmingham, it is much smaller than some of its Eastern counterparts. As a consequence there are less facilities. It is not unusual for us to drive accross the city to go somewhere - food, shop, visit people etc, but it generally does not take long at all e.g. 30mins.
Lots of nice beaches in both places. The ones in Perth are less crowded, but when you compare to the number of people on beaches in Europe, there is no comparison.
It is very difficult to pick between the 2 since it really depends on what you want. We chose Perth because it was smaller and the climate is not so humid. Where we live is nicer than it would have been in Sydney for the same money. There are pros and cons to each.

Cost is a big one - in housing of course, and that can depend on your income.
For our family occupations Sydney or Melbourne were going to offer the best opportunity, that is Print and specialist IT.
Another big factor for us was our children, I have an uncle in Perth and his children left and moved the min they were 17 for work and university opportunities. Not saying this is won't be happening to me in Sydney but there does seem more of a choice in future occupations and opportunity of employment in trades in Sydney. But then it could be an excellent excuse move to Wagga or some other remote town and then the little buggers are bound to naff off.
I have never been to Perth so I am only commenting on perceived differences from our point of view - I must admit the title of remotest capital in the world put me off quite a bit.

I am offended to be considered living in a city compared to Paris.

Sydney - 3 879 400 (1996 Census).
Perth - 1 400 000 (2003 estimate)
Sydney & Melb would have increased a bit, but I doubt it would be that much.
