The CBD is definately not the best feature of Cairns, it's a mish mash of different architecture and in need of a face lift in my opinion.

Agreed.

There was a lot of debate about it between council, business leaders and tourism chiefs a few weeks back.

It was good to hear the council intend leading the way and doing something about it.

so i wasn't wrong in my thoughts that it looks shabby in the CBD. As long as it is just the looks tho then that is fine.

Still not decided tho, hubby finding work is my biggest worry

Cairns is nice and the Atherton tablelands are great and not so hot up there. Cairns is also close to other places down the coast and there are all the resort islands etc.

My parents lived in Tully for a while and they liked it, Tully has the highest rainfall in Australia.

LOL, thats almost the exact same reaction I had way back in 1980. There were some extradoridinarly skimpy outfits being worn and some very odd looking charactors. I was in my Mid 20's at the time and It made me want to try my luck at living there.

The wife had the final say though.

Spending 7 days North of Carins broken down at Palmer River also made me realise the weather wasn't for me.

We once spent a week in a forest resort at Cape Tribulation and I remember the weather being surprisingly mild......certainly not as harsh as it has been here in Brisbane recently.....perhaps the proximity to the sea makes a difference.

I've been to Perth for a visit, but there was nothing there that I found attractive. Basically your average Australian big city: small centre surrounded by miles and miles of identical suburbia (the exception to this is the Gold Coast, it doesn't really have a city centre, it comprises almost entirely suburb and theme parks).

Cairns is about as different as it can be. Drive in any direction from the city centre and you leave the suburbs behind in about ten minutes and you're in open country passing nicely distinct beach settlements, the occasional cane industry town or you're climbing the mountain up to the tablelands, about an hour away. A fabulous one hour drive to the north is Port Douglas and the Daintree Range (a bit further north): THE best place in Australia to spend a weekend. One hour to the south is Mission Beach if you prefer your coastal experience a bit more environmental.

You can live as close to the city as you like. I would choose one of the northern beaches. A lot of people like the foot of the range to the west of the city. Your husband should take up golf.

I could write for a long time on this....

Just choose Cairns.

No water restrictions either.

The golf is good. The best course is the links at Port Douglas, but in and around Cairns you have the Cairns Golf Club and Half Moon Bay at Yorkies Knob (Yes. You did read that correctly). If he wants to be utterly humiliated he can try Paradise Palms.

There's fishing aplenty. Lake Tinaroo on the Tablelands has outstanding fishing for Australian coarse species and some of the biggest barramundi in the world. The estuaries on the coast have good fishing (but watch out for the crocs) and the sea fishing is as good as anywhere in the world.
