Default Perth lovely River the Dieing Swan?

Must get me net out , the fish are floating on top of the river?

FROM Dalwallinu in the north, to beyond Southern Cross in the east and down to the Stirling Range in the south, with an area of some 120,000 square kilometres, the Avon catchment is enormous.

Unfortunately for the people of Perth it is also the headwaters to the Swan and when it rains in big amounts, as it did 12 days ago, it discharges all the pollution from one of the nation's biggest environmental disasters on to our State capital's doorstep.

Including contributing to fish kills and algal blooms, the region east of the Darling Range gets away with dumping heavy metals, nutrients, sediments and hyper-saline waters into what it considers its personal drainage ditch. Not only is this problem being ignored by most in the region, some seek to make it worse by increasing the efficiency of pollution discharge by digging unsightly drains across the landscape. I really feel for the relatively small polluters who occupy so much of the media's time while issues like this are ignored by our regulators.

T. MITCHELL, Albany.
