Perth - Job market getting serious - or is it just me ?

Hi All,

Im writing this as im curious if its just me.

Im qualified accountant (ACCA), with 12 years experience, plus 6 months over east, and 9 months local in Perth, mostly commercial sector.

Iv been job hunting for 4 months now, and im starting to get panicky about the job market.

I have met with over a dozen recruitment agents, and have only had 1 proper interview, ie. with a company. That was 2 weeks ago, and I havent heard back despite following up, so thats probably gone(its torture waiting though).

I get great feedback from agents(great CV, excellent experience, good interviewee, presentable, communicate well etc.) but sorry, there just isnt any work.

Im getting very nervous, as the missus is pregnant, and due in January. Luckily she's a nurse, so we have a decent income, although paying almost $500 a week for a reasonable(nothing special) house takes its toll on the finances.

Im seriously considering asking the local supermarket, shops & bar if they need someone casual(non-accountant work), primarily for money, but also as im going stir crazy sitting at home staring at the phone.

Is it just me ?? How are others finding the market ?

In engineering there are bits and pieces about and it has picked up ever so slightly in the last few weeks. Nowhere near like it was though

Unfortunately in a slow jobs market it becomes about who you know - wherever you live

The last couple of weeks there's been a lot of activity in Queensland.

I work in welding Engineering and the work has dried up in Perth but is picking up over East. Unfortunately they are not paying the wages that we've been getting over in the West.

Thanks for the replies !

Its early days on the thread, but no accountants in Perth have replied, perhaps it is just me ?

Have several friends that have been laid off this year and all have struggled to get anything. One was laid off in March and last week managed to get a job at minimum wage. He had applied for anything and everything for months

Mixed bag. Some friends can't find anything, others have more work than they can handle.

Defo slower than 12 months ago, but who knows what an election will bring.

My Perth based daughter Nyz, is being made redundant from her role as a project manager with the the current NBN coordinators "Lease Lend" in September. She has a interview lined up for her "Dream job" as a Project manager for a major interior design company on Thursday.... Other than that she hopes/is fairly sure she will be picked up by the new NBN contractors.

It will be interesting to see how she goes. Never out of work for long.

I've got friends who are having trouble getting work. There's going to be some big announcements at my place next week and it isn't going to be good.

I'm hoping that I'll be OK given that I've been here over 10 years and they'll have to cough up loads to get rid of me... unless they've been spying on me and seen how much time I spend on Reddit and Expats!

Still, what's the saying?

"grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change"

or is it

"grant me the serenity not to kill every single one of these motherf**kers"

Lend Lease are building all the substations for this project - a shitload of work but it's has nothing to do with the NBN

We'll never get it as it will never be finished - whoever wins the election

Unbelievable, others get to download blu-ray ISOs and we have to make do with 720p.

That's what the NBN is for, right?

All the placements are by Lend Lease and people are moving from Syntheo back to Lend Lease companies.

http://www.syntheo.com.au/

Just been on to daughter to make 100pct sure.... Service stream won the contract, didn't have the financial power to back up what they bid for, so Lend lease had it's afflilate Syntheo take over.... Daughter works for Syntheo.... for a little while longer at least.

Really interested to see how she goes in this job market.

couple of guys who i work were out of work since february before they got on my current project.. and they moved to Qld to get work

its a mixed bag. Definitely harder than last year.. but hopefully with the election we will see a turn up as some of the uncertainty disappears
