I cant wait - 15 years and I can retire....Best hope I dont last beyond 55 or im stuffed, my Super will never cover it ;)

I've already got my eyes on that place looking out right on the beach in Cottesloe (down at the very southern end) It faces straight out to Rotto, I can sit on the balcony sipping a beer watching the latest crazy sport there doing in the water, whilst keeping my eye on the joggers going past ;)

We are having a problem finding rental properties at moment with the three of them . Here is good site to look at

Gives you an idea of the crime rates around the different areas

Take a Captain Cook at this thread and see how you get on. :)

Hi all just a quick note to say thanks to all who answered this thread. All your info is greatly appreciated and will help us in our search. We are off to Perth on Thursday 30th for 3 weeks and now know where to focus our searches and where to avoid.
Many thanks again
Graham.

On the house front we are looking for a newish 4 bed detached home with pool and garages x2. Budget will be around $600-750,000 give or take a few $$$$. My son is 12 years and at high school and this will be key to the area we choose to settle.
We would love as all people would to live close to the beach but budget in mind we realise that this may not be possible.
We are travelling to Perth at the end of March to check out the suburbs and I was really looking to tap into other ex-pats experiences around Perth and get some idea of the good/bad North/South areas. If we are unable to find a house this trip then we will rent for a period once we arrive till we find somewhere suitable. Thanks again.
Graham.

Maybe if you don't know where you want to go, renting would be the best option anyway. That is what we plan to do.

Also $600-750 is a good amount of money to have behind you, and you shouldn't have any problems finding something near to, or even on the coast.

I think Rockingham would be as south as we would go because Ivan has got to travel to CBD for work. I think Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour, Safety Bay have been in our price range but may be too far to travel into Perth.
Like the sound of Fremantle but looks abit pricey for us.
Any views on Canning Vale, Munster, Bull Creek, Leeming, Success? Any where between Fremantle & Rockingham basically!

I live in Leeming and travel to Port Kennedy/ Mandurah daily, I can do Mandurah in 40 minutes because I'm travelling against the traffic. Leeming is right on the Freeway/ Roe Highway so transport links are spot on. City (on a good day 15 minutes, 14k) Freo 15 minutes any day, airport 15 minutes.

With the new rail line and new hospital being built next door to St John of God in Murdoch house prices are booming (creating the biggest health campus in WA)

I love Freo but out of my price range.

Success is a bit further south but looks OK.

Canning Vale is nice but further away from the beach. Bull Creek is good too.

We went for Leeming as everything is pretty close to what we want.

Thanks for that Walla. A few more questions on Leeming for you then ;)

How far is it from the beach?
What are the schools like?
Any activities for little ones (daughter is 3).
What are the facilities like - shopping, eating out?
Any other info gratefully recieved :)

Coogee Beach is 20 minutes away, there are closer ones but not much kop, Cottesloe is about 25 minutes away.

Not sure about the schools (Leeming Senior High), my 2 go out of suburb to a school in Bateman, well 1 does, 1 left this year.

We have a shopping centre where one can get essentials but we shop at Bull Creek or Garden City in Burragoon.

Got a leisure centre, golf course, driving range, and plenty of parks, typical suburbia.

Having said that we like it because of its location.

as part of the Labour Governments manifesto a new hospital was promised to be built next to the private St John of God hospital in Murdoch to service the southern suburbs. 2008 I think they said...

You're going to be really close to Garden City shopping centre. It has a multitude of clothes shops, all the teens ones are grouped together. 2 dept stores, sports shops, 2 CD shops, Accessorize, The Body Shop, a food court, a cinema.

hello,

We want to live near Freo too - have watched as house prices have rocketed out of our budget in the last few years..... :( .We are looking at Palmyra, Willageee (ex-state housing suburb but lots of redevelopment clse to Freo, solid houses with jarrah floors ripe for renovation) and Hilton (also an ex-state housing suburb but very close to Freo - you could definitely cycle into Freo on a weekend with the kids for example) and Hamilton Hill. There is also the odd property in Beaconsfield or White Gum Valley that comes up. Melville and Bicton also sometimes have houses under $500K but would also be a renovation project.

My brother lives in Canning Vale. He likes it, but we find it is far too "new" for us. A good fish and chip shop though  . Problem is you have to drive to the shops, although the little shoppong mall there has a Wollies and Big W and would be fine for day-to-day shopping needs, you'd still have to drive though. There are also a few restaurnants on Nicholson Road - I've been to the imaginatively named Nicholsons and quite liked it - there is a newish pub just opened up Dec 2004 but we didn't go there on our last trip to Perth.

Does anyone have any thoughts on heading inland from Perth?
While we love the beach we were thinking that maybe we should look to live somewhere more 'in the country'.

We were also thinking that we might be able to afford a house with a bit more land that way (although that may be wishful thinking!)

We are expecting to need to be able to commute into the city for work so we don't want to really be any more than about 45 minutes from CBD.

Thanks
Tiggs

Try Kalamunda, Sawyers Valley, Boya, Mundaring or Gidgegannup. :)

If you want to know where they are (with particular refernece to their distance from the Perth CBD), just click here, select "Western Australia" from the drop-down menu, punch the names into the "Suburb or Town" box and hit the "Find" button.
