Also just to let everyone know that I have taken all the useful info that I have collected since we moved here almost a year ago and compiled a new migrant file which is now being held at Joondalup Public Library, in the Community Information Section (where I work), we have also put a link onto the Joondalup Council website to tell people about our group.

http://www.joondalup.wa.gov.au/cms/t...e_pg.asp?id=50 then search for migrants or click on M in the index window.

The council so far have been quite receptive to the idea of providing a free information service for new migrants and have even put a whole new section in the libraries easy links, covering the most popular subjects of migration.

http://www.joondalup.wa.gov.au/cms/t...109&mode1=full

Hopefully both the links and the file will grow in time but I need to prove there is a need for such a service, so if anyone has any ideas where I can get statistics of the numbers of new migrants to Joondalup and the northern suburbs and how I can prove this service would be of value to new migrants please let me know! I have been collecting numbers of new migrants that visit the library to use the internet facilities and talk to me about aspects of their move (which seems to be going down a treat with newbies, they really seem to appreciate seeing a friendly face and asking all those tricky questions they dont seem to be able to find the answer to!...what did you do about this, what did you do about that etc etc.) but I could do with some official figures!

I'll keep you posted on the developments at the library!

Fantastic site. I've bookmarked it already, really helpful, I finally found a Judo school for my son!

There is someone out there !......Hya, we are looking to move to somewhere near Madeley which is north of perth, although, since we went out there last march house prices have climbed by about 10%, so may need to look a little further out.
How about you, any ideas yet? or gotta place set up?

Am currently looking at the schools out there to find the best one, that will have a large part in where we finally settle down.

We are a Hairdresser (thats what got us in) and a Cash and carry manager and cannot wait to get out there and stuck in!

Mother in law has just come back after three months in Perth, pretty hot but loved every minute of it......now thinking of following the grandkids out there! :scared:

A hairdresser? Will you be my friend? :D :D

We are staying in a serviced apartment in Subiaco for the first month and are looking to rent in Sorrento, Duncraig, Padbury, and surrounding areas when our furniture arrives. Hubby's office is on Kings Park Road (West Perth) and he doesn't want to be too far away from there. We're going to spend our 1st 2 weeks in Perth visiting the schools in these areas to try to get a 'feel' for the right one. I'm hoping that the right one for our girls will just leap out at us. :D

My parents have already booked their flights to come and visit in July (during kids holidays) and at Xmas!

Hi again! So glad you decided on Perth, you made a good choice!! Claire has been asking if we have heard from you, I will let her know you are coming to settle here, she will be thrilled. She has now started her full time posh job so we dont see as much of her as we did. It is very sad when members get work and no longer come to the meetings, they are sadly missed but hey, they still come to the night outs etc! The group has grown so much since we started it, we have upward of 40 members now, not all come to every meeting, but the last meal we had, 37 of them attended and it was a nightmare to organise (thanks to Claire and Sue for that). I am really amazed by the amount of friendly people we have and feel priviliged to have such a great group of people to turn to in order to create some truely memorable social events, I am sure you will both fit in great here, Good Luck!

5teve Mar 22nd 2006 5:02 pm

Re: PERTH-help for newbies!

yeah we think its a good choice too ;O) if you see claire tell her we will be emailing her soon... when time permits! things have gone a bit mad here and we have a million and one things to get done before i go back out!

as i said having the expats group there swung the decision as it does help to get rid of the homesick blues having people we know.. thats if we get them at all! i should imagine the sun gets rid of a few of the blues!

when im back over i will have to see if i can get a thursday off! i'll be buggered if im buying 37 cream cakes tho!!! ;O)

see you soon

Hi

Just arrived yesterday to Freo, got 4 weeks here. Hopefully they are busy working on our visa as we "type" and when we arrive back in the UK on 28th May there is an envelope with positive news, ie. YES!!!

Anyway, never mind about that, please can you tell me when the next meet is at Hilary's. Would love to go and meet you all. Do you mind if I bring a blokey type person, ie. my boyfriend Paul. May be persuaded to buy the cakes!!! He could also adapt to being an honary girly in disguise (doesnt do thongs, except on feet!!)

Hi! :)

My husband and I emigrate on 5th August. We are familiar with Perth as my parents live out there, though I'm keen to meet new people. I'm 25 and am a primary teacher. I'd love to meet up at some point around that time (providing something has been arranged?) and have a good ol' natter - the coffee and cake sounds fab!

I think it's a great idea to have these gatherings and I look forward to meeting up with some of you very soon!
Kate.

Sounds good - I'll keep my eyes peeled too!

Are you from the primary or secondary gang? I'm teaching primary (year 5 at the mo.) Am only in my second year but am loving it. Soon we'll be telling the kiddies to pop their sunnies on and reach for their sun hats - hmmm! Sounds good doesn't it!

Speak soon, Kate :)

I am in the lucky position that I teach primary and secondary. I am secondary PE trained but am in a private school so teach the 7- 18 age group. Took some time to get used to 7 year olds but I enjoy it now!

Re: PERTH-help for newbies!

Hi everyone

Haven't been on here for a while now as the group seems to be promoting itself! The group has gone from a bunch of 4 regular ladies sat around a solitary table to upwards of 20 occupying 6 tables. The Dome have actually approached us and stated that due to our size they have laid on another member of staff!! This just goes to prove how successful we are.....good on ya girls! I for one have found a great group of people that have all had their ups and downs and although everyone has their own opinions about Australia v UK they are happy to listen, encourage and support one another through the downs and share in the good times we have......and boy have there been some over the past year! News Years Eve party, several house warmings, birthday parties, Spring in the Valley Wine tours (by the way this year's only has one place left!), bbq's, even doggie birthday parties etc etc. My life here in Oz wouldn't be the same if it weren't for you guys, no doubt there would have been some ping pongs amongst us without the support of the group so thank you all!

And to all you newbies just arriving or out on reckies or about to leave blighty......if you can make the effort to join us (and I know it can be daunting!), you can be assured of a great group of friends, a wealth of migration advice and experience and a fantastic social life!

Hope to see you all very soon.....keep em coming girls!

Oh and to those who have plucked up the courage to seek us out unaided......well done.

To you who have failed to find us, I will try to remember my flag next week, but please no whinging about Oz, we are happy to listen to your problems if you are trying to overcome them but if you haven't anything good to say about our home, keep your opinions to yourself we dont wanna hear it ;0)

I would just like to add, that I'm relatively new to the Dome meets. I have already found a group of women with whom I can honestly say have made a difference to my life here.I was already enjoying myself but this has just made things better.

By the way to all people coming here or that are already here. It does not matter what country you are from, all that matters is that you want to give your new home a chance.
