COL is roughly similar, maybe slightly less in Perth.

If your package is worth what I think it should be, ie. mid 6 figure salary per annum + LAFHA you will be just fine. We have a HUGE mortgage and we still manage to put a bit aside and enjoy a good life.

I think alot of immigrants are on lower wages to start with cos they have to start lower down the ladder or even the bottom. Its who you know, not what you know, in this world.

The latest evidence on regional pay shows that Londoners take home an average of £520 a week before tax, far above the UK average of £400.
  • Workers in the south east have the second-highest pay packets - £423.20. But workers in the north east are at the bottom of the pay scale, with average weekly pay of £349.60.

  • Weekly wages in Wales are also well below the average at £353.60 and in Scotland the average take-home pay is £364.90.

  • The average annual salary in the UK before tax is £20,919.
Source.

Australia averaged A$53,860 per annum in early 2006. (According to the Bureau of Statistics.)

If overtime and bonuses are included, earnings were $56,350 per annum.

The average full-time male wage (excluding overtime) in Australia is $57,130 per annum

The average full-time female wage in Australia (excluding overtime) is $48,115 per annum.

[...]
  • Tasmania - $48,240

  • Queensland - $50,270

  • South Australia - $50,705

  • Victoria - $53,175

  • Northern Territory - $53,535

  • Western Australia - $55,025

  • New South Wales - $56,320

  • Capital Territory - $62,060
Source. (This site also shows the average wage per industry).

UK's average wage of £20,919 = 50,205.

Australia's average wage of $53,860 = £22,441. With overtime and bonuses included, this rises to $56,350 (£23,479).

The OP asked a serious question, so you spend your time rigging up some UK 1999 data and comparing it to 2006 aussie data, jeez vash how helpful is that.

Perth also had the biggest mining boom in 2005/2006 so people looking at normal jobs should be aware huge mining wages would push this years figures up a bit.

Apologies for posting the wrong date. What an idiot.

I'm not aware of any 2006 figures for the UK, but here's the 2005 figures from the UK government's National Statistics Website:

The median annual pay for full-time women increased by 4.8 per cent in 2005 to £19,400.

Median annual earnings for full-time employees for the 2004-05 tax year stood at £22,900, up 3.8 per cent on the previous year.

Full-time males earned £25,100, up 3.5 per cent.
Source.

So...

Average UK salary: £24,900 = $54,960.

Average Australian salary before overtime & bonuses: $53,860 = £22,900. With overtime & bonuses: $56,350 = £23,479.

In short, the difference between the two countries is negligible.

These are very interesting figures Vash. So the wages are pretty much the same, but cost of living is the same. maybe a little more in Perth. Perth is supposed to be one of the cheapest cities in Oz in which to live. So by that reckoning, if you lived in Melbourne, you would be worse off than the uk?

But aren't houses cheaper?
