House prices are definitely a problem here (another reason I'm glad I came so long ago). Parts of the Central coast (on the coast, not Wyong way) are really nice and cheaper than Sydney but it's a long commute. Also further up the coast towards Newcastle has some lovely spots but Newcastle itself is a bit of a problem. There are some nice places under the escarpment down south towards Wollongong and I also like the Kiama area, but again it's a long way to Sydney.

No quick solutions to the house price problem unfortunately. Any bargains within a reasonable commute of Sydney are snatched up fast. I think the far north of NSW is gorgous around Byron Bay/Lennox Head and you're not that far from the Gold Coast. In fact, there are lovely places all up and down the NSW coast which are great to visit but as there's very little work out of the cities, most are not viable to live in.
Sorry Nicky - had to go to bed so didn't get to reply last night!

As it was my daughter was up at 3 with a cold!

I had an interview ate Caledonian many years ago! Didn't get the job mind you! I worked for JAL for 5 years in the end.

You are very lucky to be living where you are. When we first starting looking at real estate it was just affordable for us - but now it has gone up far more than our property has! So - We are going to try Perth to start with and maybye if things go well with Eds job who knows Sydney may be possible one day - nothing is written in stone and while the kids are young it will be a good lifestyle. You can't plan your life out anyway can you? who knows

Hi to you all
Renth,
I agree with you that the beaches and scenery in Perth are absolutely stunning, but with 3 kids aged between 5 and 13 I am concerned that beach- life will not be enough to keep them occupied. Is there much more to Perth than the beautiful beaches?

Nickyc,
what you said about the remoteness of Perth from anywhere else is exactly what I am worrying about.I love the quiet life so am not worried about me loving wa, although I do want to explore all of Australia when we get there.
I am thinking more about the children, and if there is plenty for us to do as a family because that is the main reason for us moving to Aus.

I keep hearing about flights inside Australia being "really expensive",how much is "really expensive"?

Example from Flight Centre - Perth to Brisbane $239 one way - on special.

Also worth looking at Virgin Blue and Qantas .

I'm not being cheeky here, just curious

perth is a city of 1.3million people, Great Yarmouth has a population of under 100,000 people.

How does she figure that Perth is isolated ???????

Surely Perth has a lot more to offer than Gt Yarmouth peoplewise, facilitywise, scenerywise ????

Also taking the population out of the equation, I accept that the distance between Perth and Sydney or even Broome or Albany is greater than the distance between Great Yarmouth and London or even Paris, but do you really go to London & Paris every other weekend or is it for special occasions and Holidays only ?

Do you and your children go out and about exploring the countryside and Alton Towers every weekend or are you like most families in that you do those kind of things when you have visitors but otherwise stay pretty much at home, socialising with friends and family, doing the weekly shop at Asda and Sunday trawl round B&Q ?

I sometimes wonder about this isolation thing of Perth, we live in the Medway Towns and London is about 1 hour drive from us, but how many times do we go there? We have beaches near us and we have City of Rochester etc with many attractions such as Canterbury - how many times do we go there?? Hardley ever.

When you live your day to day lives I dont think it matters where you live to a degree - well yes you do have days out etc and holidays but not every day and it does come down to money as well I feel - we still have to work everyday and normal living, so really its only holiday times etc you can visit all these places - and Australia is so vast surely you can do the "holiday thing" to different parts of Oz (if you know what I mean). Kids adapt and are bored wherever you live, but there must be clubs etc out there and I should imagine if they have a good group of friends it doesnt matter if they live in Perth or Brisbane things would be exactly the same for them.

I am definately going to give Perth a good go, if the kids when they are older wanna travel to different parts of Oz well I shall happily let them go - well a 4 hour flight to Queensland is better than a 24 hour flight to UK. When they are little such as my younger two they adapt, they dont know any different and just accept live as the "norm", its only because us as adults know theres much more out there!!! and those kids will have the choice as they get older!!!

Now after my lecture (sorry everyone) I shall go and have a coffee break.

Hi Mairi and chris

I am said wife who is causing my hubby this headache

Have you ever been to Gt.Yarmouth......Perths scenery and facilities are nothing in comparison!!!!where are the chip stalls on the market, the amusement arcades and then there is the lovely smell of horse s**t from the horse and carts as you wander along the promenade

I know exactly what you are saying and to an extent agree, but when we eventually arrive in Aus. I want to explore as much of the country as I can.
I am worried that once we are in Perth we wont be able to afford the flights out to visit other places because from what I am reading from alot of posters is that electricians wages(my hubbies trade) aren't brilliant.
Don't get me wrong I am not going to Aus and expecting to earn loads of money(good job really) , but was hoping to travel around and explore abit.I was just wondering if it would be easier to do this from somewhere not so far away from everywhere else!!

Like Nickyc said after 5 years will we be wishing we had chosen somewhere else after exploring all Perth has to offer?

Anyway,I am probably just having a panic attack and wa does look fantastic, but I just thought it might be worth finding out about other places before we commit ourselves to Perth.

Nice picture but it really doesnt mean diddly squat !

Yes Australia is much bigger than UK. Yes UK has more people than Australia.

But if someone is moving from a relatively small provincial town to a large state-capital city how can they think they will feel isolated (other than the standard missing local friends and family thing that they would feel east coast or west coast, north or south and would also feel if they stayed in the UK and moved up to Scotland for example) ?

how many people in the UK complaining about the isolation of perth have driven the few hundred miles from London up to the lake district for a long weekend ? a few percentage points at most.

How many have driven or flown up to the far northern highlands ? even fewer I would guess !!!

People in the UK are not used to travelling a few hunderd miles in a normal week let alone a few thousand, so the distances seem vast to them. But what they havent seemed to realise is that most Australians aren't whizzing about the country from side to side either.

Most Australians are living the same standard boring lives of jobs, housework, shopping etc. that people the world over live.

SARAH (will she ever make her mind up?)

Hi Sarah,
Yes I have been to Great Yarmouth, used to work in the Oil industry so was in GtY a lot.

That's why I went off on my high horse cos GtY is not exactly the centre of the universe with huge cultural and scenic possibilities Perth (or almost anywhere) has got to be better than GtY.

I understand what you are saying but looking at if from the other angle, when living in Great Yarmouth have you explored every centimetre of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Italy.......

My point being you have much easier access to exploring other countries cultures etc.. when living in Europe, but if you haven't done it here what makes you think you are going to do it in Oz ? other than the once / twice a year holiday

Flights from Perth to Sydney and Brisbane can be got for under A$400, about which is cheaper than the GBP200 it would cost you to go to Greece, Turkey, Spain, Norway or most places not on the Ryan Air travel schedules.

Anyway shutting up now. Good luck whatever you do !!

Mairi
(all my relatives in Brisbane, but still heading for Perth)

Maybe you'll find out. Your small provincial town in Europe is surrounded by 100's of millions creating a market place vastly greater than that of Perth. Some can not adapt.

and still they have only interacted with a few thousand at the most !!!! And even then only on a superficial level for most.

Some people can't adapt to a move of 50kms down the road to a new town !!!!!

The location or size or isolation is not the problem, just the excuse - the problem is the newness and the lack of familiarity, friends etc.. whether its 50kms or 12000 kms

I agree with you!

I work in the oil industry and come to scotland every month. But before working here i had never came before, or the lake district or Ireland or wales or the norfolk broads which is 2 miles away.

You have to be bold stand up and be counted and say this is what I am doing this is where I'm going and thats that.

They interact with billions. Perth is the world's most isolated city > 1 M.
