hello all,

we are new to the website and find the forums very informative.

my wife, son and i fly out to perth from birmingham, england on august 10th.

we are thinking of mandurah as an initial base and my wife is hoping to work as a mental health nurse specializing in child and adolescent services.

so, we were wondering if anyone had any advice on our chosen destination and employment opportunities in the surrounding area.

Pack some winter woolies it will be cold. Not the foggiest about Mandurah though I am north of the city.

well for a nursing job, i would recommend living near the subiaco area, i dont live in perth but are hoping to move down there, our friends who we met on our holiday to perth told us the main areas for cafe's, restaurants etc. and hospitals are commonly found in subiaco or on the outskirts of perth CBD.

As for mandurah...nice choice, near the coast so you'll see wicked sunsets and easy access to the beach

However if you want to be close to the city i would recommend areas around joodaloop city as it is near the coast and near the city.

Hi,
We have set up about an hour south of Mandurah in a small town called Binningup.
My other half is about to start work for the health service as a speech pathologist but have found that the further away from Perth you go, less services are available. Have heard that mental health services are very stretched (just like the U.K) especially in regional WA (anywhere outside Perth).
On the plus side there is an emphasis on child services and early intervention and Mandurah can be considered part of the Perth metro area (therefore more opportunities).

Just another thought, take a look at www.jobs.wa.gov.au for department of health positions. Might give you an idea of whats out there.

thank you jenny- winter woolies? that was something i wasn't banking on, i'll keep it in mind assuming i can squeeze them in next to my wife's shoe collection.

thanks for the advice vik, we did consider jondaloop, but liked the look of mandurah although we are pretty flexible. in the long run i suppose it depends on how long we are prepared to travel to work.

well say your wife is working in subiaco (which is the most likely in any health related jobs) and you live in mandurah, you'll be looking at around 1 1/2 hour drive, and the same amount of time to get to perth CBD.

But say you lived in a suburb in joondaloop city (say ocean reef) you would be looking around 1/2 hour drive to subiaco, and around the same to perth CBD.

what requirements do you want in the area you want to live in (near the sea, near the city etc.)

Thanks for that, it does sound quite promising. Luckily were in a position where we have a few months to sort ourselves out once we get there, but am keen to know what job oppurtunities there are as i'm aware CAMHS is a specialised area and therfore maybe problematic. Any advice regarding services available close to Mandurah is great.

I don't know anyone who could drive from Joondalup into the CBD in 30 minutes during rush hour!

The train line from Mandurah into Perth is now up and running and is an excellent and efficient service.

Where abouts in Birmingham are you from or are you just flying from there? I used to live in Kings Heath then moved to Redditch 13 years ago. We live in Perth in an area called Ashby which is NOR. It is definitely cold in the winter here, more so in the house if you have no heating, I haven't even bought any coats with me as I charity shopped the lot! Will have to go on a shopping trip.

true, during rush hour.

But we managed it in 25 at around 2pm
btw, the speed limit was not broken...lol

And yh the train service is also set up now, and it is pretty reliable
