Perth or Adelaide
 

Hi,

Probably going to get a major for & against here.

But anyway here goes, we are wishing to emigrate, der of course, but we just can`t decide Perth (in & around) or Adelaide. :unsure:

We have friends in both areas & all they seem to do is confuse us so thought you guys as independants might be able to help, please.

We are a family of 4 my husband is an electrician, me a will be qualified nurse, I have a son 17yr (loves sports like football etc) & a daughter of 7yr (who wants a pony I might add).

So with these thing in mind can anyone helps with the selection, as a big country we want our rekky to be in the area we wish to settle in not darting all over areas, plus visiting is not the same as living in. :confused: Also the importance of choosing either Western or Southern Australia is my husband seeing as he just past 40yrs to save on the ilelts test, 3 yrs in occupation (Nov 2008) he can go sponsorship.

Pros cons etc for us on Perth or Adelaide :thumbsup::thumbdown: please, thanks as so confused

Hi, i cannot advise on either Perth or Adelaide as it is personal choice and i have only been to Sydney and Queensland. One thing i would consider is you are intending on renting initially is that there are plenty of rental properties in Perth but they are very scarce in Adelaide and are far more expensive for a smaller house. My friend and her family emmigrated 16 months ago state sponsored to Adelaide and they couldn,t get a rental as when one became available there would be 30 or so couples after same house! They couldn,t find work (butcher)
either so are now living in Noosa (really nice but exclusive).
I would also consider the house prices are rising in Adelaide so if you are intending to buy straight away this may be a good time b4 they peak as they have already done in Perth!
I really fancied Perth and it is only 18 hours from the u.k which may be of benefit to elderly friends you may want to visit!
I am sure both have a lot to offer, i believe and someone will correct me if i am wrong that the wages are higher in Perth than Adelaide and the climate is not as warm in the winter months in Adelaide as they have proper seasons. I didn,t fancy Adelaide as i felt there was not as much there as other parts of Australia and that it looked a bit too much like England!!:confused:

Hi all,

For me it's all about the weather...Adelaide, I believe, is a temporate climate...no good...I'm leaving the UK to get AWAY from a temporate climate!!!!! :rofl: Anywhere mid to North sounds good to me!! :thumbsup::thumbup:

I know of 4 families that have tried Adelaide and moved to Perth but none that have gone the other way.

Personally we went to SA before WA and ended up settling in WA. SA just wasn't for us. However, my advice would be to visit both. It doesn't take long before you get a 'feel' for whether a place is right for you or not and this is a big decision.

ditto..... not sure of their reasons though

to the op: ask your friends to investigate your job prospects in both cities as that would be my first concern - no point going to either if you're not going to be able to afford to live.

You could try and pretend you were in Perth before you move there?
So,
To see if you like the lifestyle,disconnect sky, 4/5 channels of dirge/commercials is enough anyway,adopt 40 black crows for your garden(crowing ones prefered),
then move next door to a building site,
secure a blockbuster card(bucket seats,900" plasma screen optional),
lose your fashion sense(again optional,depending upon previous attitude).
Drink your body weight in low strength beer(be sure to tell everyone within earshot you have done such an amazing feat).
Walk aimlessly around soulless shopping precincts,getting the feeling of deja vu every 2 minutes
If you have a sense of humour,please be sure to leave it in Blighty.
Curse the Poms,love the (OZ)dream,walk the swaggery walk.
Remember if its dark,its bedtime..................

Then move to Adelaide.

or you could open your mind to a more laid back way of life where fashion isnt the be all and end all.

didnt know Adelaide benefited from extra TV channels - that in itself is reason enough to think about upping sticks to SA. :thumbup: :lol:

i dont know what's wrong with people that they have to type up THEIR feelings about something as if they are fact.

Totally agree with you Bridie. Just because I hate sweetcorn and believe it to be only good as fishing bait does not mean that it holds true for everyone!

I think the OP needs to see both places for themselves and then decide.

No-one has the same needs or wants in life, no two people have the same experiences of places. I love living in Perth (but I think everyone knows that by now :o ) and I don't want to live in Adelaide after I heard it described as Church Central! But I will go and have a look for myself one day to make sure

Got any popcorn to go with that Pizza?

So you spend the first day visting churches but what do you do on day 2? At least Melbourne isn't so far away.:p

Adelaide was given the name 'City of churches' due to religious freedom, not religious fantacism.

Don't let me stand in the way of a good Adelaide bashing though..

I don't mind people knocking Adelaide, it makes me laugh.

We have lived here for just over two years.....living it and loving it.....don't knock it until you have tried it.

I would not say anything detremental about another place if I had not personally lived there, I hate it when people start by saying 'I have heard that...' do they really trust everything they 'hear'.
