Perth to Adelaide
Has anyone out there taken the train from Perth to Adelaide across the Nullabor?
Interesting?, or a bit boring? (I have two small kids!) |

You will stop in Cook and Kalgourlie, both of which are worth a sticky-beak (or maybe that's only westbound, the direction I took). Just a smidge under two days, all-up. Not cheap, but how many times are you going to do it?? check out gsr.com.au for more details |

Having driven across and trained back (without kids) and flown across and back (with and without kids!), I would say that: * The Indian Pacific is good, if you like travelling on trains. * Eastbound you arrive at Kalgoorlie late evening on day 1 and Cook around lunchtime on day 2, so a Kalgoorlie tour may be too late for your two. * If you want sleepers, you would need two twin cabins. You might consider squeezing into one Deluxe cabin (small double bed with fold-down single + table, chairs, video and fridge). If you are in Perth, have a look at the train after it arrives or before it departs one day. * The train is pretty pricey (unless you down mind sitting up for two nights!). http://www.gsr.com.au/indian/gold.htm and http://www.gsr.com.au/fares/indian.htm * If your kids don't mind lonnnnnnnnnnnng journeys (3000km), you could drive it (3 days), more if you break the journey at Esperance or Kalgoorlie, but there is not much to do between there and Ceduna, apart from the looking at the cliffs on the Bight and some mining operations. * You could consider flying. At around $200 each, it's cheaper and quicker. You can use the time saved to do daytrips from Perth and Adelaide. * Or for a compromise you could catch the Prospector train to Kalgoorlie ($54/$27), stay a night or two and fly to Adelaide on a Saturday or Sunday ($560 each, cheaper if bought in conjunction with an international fare). http://www.wagr.wa.gov.au/timetble/prospector.htm |

I always thought one had to fly back to Perth and then catch another flight to Adelaide. It seems you would be going over the same ground more than twice, and Kalgoorlie is not so good that I would want to do that! Gerrit |

Re: Perth to Adelaide
How about the "Nullarbor Traveller", a group which runs caravan trips back and forth
between Perth and Adelaide, taking nine days. Anybody done that or heard about it? Sounds like a real hoot if it's well run. Re: Perth to Adelaide
Yes, indeed, that's the web site. What I'm wondering is if there's anybody out there
who's actually done it :) And if so, a few comments...
