On a positive note, I had 3 months holiday when I got here, sent my CV out for two jobs got two interviews and two offers, the offer I accepted was to start the next day on over 150k a year. Sort of IT based, Project Management mentoring, but, dont be disheartened, Health is huge over here so try and get into it, Melbourne and Sydney for native IT, Queensland for Health.

Plus, if you are on a 457 and are contracting and not claiming LAFHA, call me and I know a man (company) who can help (its saves you a fortune).

Apply for jobs when you get to OZ. Recruiters want to know you are serious about living here. Sydney or Melbourne are the best cities for young singles.

You're a wind up merchant aren't you ? You're not arriving until May, and then only for two weeks, and you're puzzled as to why you're not getting any job offers. Its not rocket science as to why you're not getting any positive responses

I had exactly the same feeling as you have before I left the UK 4 months ago. I also work in IT as a VMware systems engineer and found the posts so negative I stopped reading them and I suggest you do the same.

I arrived here early September, I spent about 6 weeks getting used to living here before looking for work and found a job within 2 weeks.

From my experience qualifications count more over here than the UK so get certified if you can. The first job is the hardest to find but don't screw yourself up over it, there are more opportunities over here.

Where about in Australia are you moving to?

Also my friend who also works in IT moved 2 months after me and also found work without too many problems.

Personally I would not start looking for work until you are permanently settled here, you do need to show the agencies and employers you are serious about the move.

So you got you Residency Visa last month and you don't intend on making a visit until May - is this within activation period of the visa?

As for looking for IT work in Oz - unfortunately the place is backwards when it comes to recruitment. A short story for you - I recently applied for a role in Melbourne which was a very specialised role of which I know there is very few people in the UK let alone Australia with the skills.

I am not in Oz however previously I have visited and met agencies etc and hold my permanent residency visa also. I said to the agency all I ask for is a telephone interview first up to ensure it's the role I want and also for them to make sure I was the right type of person. Then if they were happy and I was happy I'd go over for a face to face and I would be over in Oz 4 weeks after an offer.

It took the agency over 1 month to convince them to purely pick up a phone for a talk! The feedback came back - everything about me was perfect for the role however an internal candidate had appeared! At this point the job had been advertised nearly 2 months before - however suddenly this internal candidate appeared (where were they in the previous 2 months??!)

So anyway the upshot was they filled the role internally but couldn't even be bothered to tell me! I've applied for a few other roles and pretty much had the same response.

I've nearly 17 years of experience specialising in Telco environments including management experience.

Anyway thankfully it's all looking likely I'll be remaining in SE Asia as I am currently having the i and t's crossed on an expat offer inclusive of relocation from an MNC in Singapore. So far all interviews (3 so far) have been conducted via telephone and I meet the Regional Director for the final talks in a few weeks. Amazing what a bit of forward thinking from a company can do - unfortunately Oz is still far away from embracing this kind of employment attitude. They complain about skills shortages but do very little to actually go about resolving the problem.

As things stand my Oz residency visa expires in a couple of years and I very much doubt it'll be renewed.

Me in the same boat as Mizo. I dont even get any resposnses, not even the ones rejecting my applications. It just seems that the best way to get a job is to move to Oz first. Any thoughts on whether Perth would be a good place to start for an Oracle DBA?

We arrived 2 months ago. Had a couple of companies interested before we came out but timings weren't quite right with one of them, although they still said to let them know when we arrived. Most of the agencies that advertised through seek didn't even bother acknowledging an application, even when we had flights booked, already sold up etc.

When we arrived we applied for 3 jobs through seek and others, and the next 7 days were full of interviews resulting in a job with an almost immediate start.

You just need to bite the bullet and move. Good luck to you. Are you planning to take your time moving, or were you just hoping to have something lined up before giving your notice in?

Sounds like great news! Can I ask which company you're working for?

We've been here since October basically exploring and settling in. Job hunting starts in earnest now - initial impressions are that Seek looks to have a number of good options.

Have you found that there's a lot more networking and informal job searching goes on over here and less standard advertised/agency positions?

Similar to me! A lot of the posts on the forum are all doom and gloom, so I stopped reading them as they were depressing me. When I got here 3 months ago, I'd got 2 job offers within 5 working days (IT PM). I arranged a load of interviews with recruitment agencies before I flew out.

The IT jobs market is a funny thing here, we came over in March and I applied for a couple of jobs which were 'already filled' despite only being on Seek for a couple of days but the agency had something else that I might be interested in..., just agencies fishing for new meat which seems really common here.

Anyway, I landed a permanent position within 3 weeks but have since realised that I shouldn't have accepted it so I'm looking hard again. In over a month of applications (about 20) I've had some callbacks from agencies and got close to interview for a couple but for the most part you just get no response whatsoever.

Where I work the service desk manager advertised directly for a new helpdesk role and got 120 applications, he interviewed 5 and selected 1, the first trawl through CVs was interesting to watch, any excuse to throw the CV onto the NO pile and filter them down was used and any not living in the right area already were also discarded (why should the employer risk somebody changing hteir mind or having relocation issues when there are plenty of local people with the right skills).

Best advice is look for work after you get here and make sure your CV is damn near perfect in layout and content.

If you want a job then I think you need to wait till you are about to go.

If you just want to test the job market - get an oz email address and sim card and send your resume without an address. See if you get any responses. Bear in mind though you are basically wasting peoples time doing this however!

I had my first phone interview the day our boxes were collected and after further interviews, medical, psycometric testing etc I started work three weeks after arriving in Adelaide. Bear in mind however that moving is pretty painful without having recruitment agencies phoning you all the bloomin time. I had my third (!) phone interview in a branch of Westpac the day we arrived with utter and total jetlag. Bad times.
