It had to be one that could sign off Australian documents. There is a special name for them that escapes me but I'm sure someone on here will know the term used.
Anyways, if you ring around your solicitors, and tell them you need a solicitor who specialises in signing off passports for Australia, they will know what you mean [from memory I think it costs about £30 per document - that was nearly 2 years ago]
Good luck with the visa
EDIT: The above was what we were told by our agent, however if you read this, it seems any solicitor may do http://britishexpats.com/forum/showt...uments+signing

Any solicitor can certify a legal document. Luckily for us, my Mother-in-law was working as a clerk in the local courts. She'd made friends with a couple of the solicitors and when she mentioned it to them ,they told her to just bring the documents in and someone will sign them.
We've had our visas issued & validated now, so there was no problem at all.

i think notary is the solicitor who can make internationally certified copies, but we certainly only had normal solicitors certify our copies, and we got our visa yesterday!! Did i mention that already?!

I believe there is a new booklet 6? - in the old version, there was a checklist you had to include with your visa application. This clearly stated you had to send certified copies of stamped passport pages, under a section called 'other documents'. Maybe this where all the confusion is - the new version of booklet 6 may not state this requirement now?
The certifying part - we used an Ozzie guy who is a qualified accountant, he told us he was a notary thingio and could certify the pages - fingers crossed its ok.
