Question 'Parent' visa experiences

I am applying for a 'contributory parent' visa - I know that there are issue with delays, but apart from that I would love to hear other people's experiences. Are you living close to your family? Have you found work? Was it very difficult to get a new life of your own, apart from your family? Did you apply for permanent or temporary - what regrets etc etc etc - I would love to hear how it was for you!

Hi there, we arrived here in January 07 on Contributory parent visa 143. It took exactly 12 months from lodgement of our application in October 05 to visa grant in October 06 and we did not use an agent. We live in Charlestown NSW, about 15 minutes walk from our son, daughter-in-law and grandson. As we are retired we do not work but have begun to do voluntary work and have also joined a local bowls club. We have found the local Australians very friendly and welcoming and are really enjoying our new life 'Down Under'. Our main regrets are leaving our daughter behind in the U.K. and also parting with our beloved collie, who we felt would not have coped with the heat here. It was also very sad to leave cherished old friends but modern technology helps us all to keep in touch. We have no real regrets but I will admit to the odd pangs of homesickness!!

Good luck with your application. Where are you heading? Will be interesting to hear of your progress. Be patient, it WILL happen!!

Regards

Linda
