Default Packing

Ho folks,
For all those who are now in NZ can you help me with some advice? I'm in the process of packing up and I'm just wondering what sort of listing the NZ Customs require for your goods. Is it very general ie box 1 contains books or do I have to list which books are in which box?
Can I also ask how you arrived at a monitary value for your household goods as I can't believe that 35 year old furniture (inherited) will be taxed as new especially as the price has dropped since it was bought!
As we will be going as students and not PR's we don't have the option of GST free importation. Anyone else taken a similar route (ie not PR or on jobsearch visa).
Any response appreciated.
Pat.
