Programmes are so dire because nobody watches them, far too busy having BBQs with your mates, surfing at the beach, getting a suntan and slip slop slapping, roaring about in a 4WD on Fraser Island, scuba diving off the Barrier Reef etc etc...it's the outdoor life for me, not sitting in front of the box.

But what do you do when it's gone dark and the kids have gone to bed and you can't go out? Let's face it you're stuck with home entertainment which includes the TV.

(and no smutty alternatives if you please!)

Ok a bit tongue in cheek. Can't you get good pay TV film, documentary & sport channels then? I know the terrestrial channels are appalling but what about subscription channels?

Anyone else noticed that any foreign programme with even the slightest Australian content/reference gets bought up and shown here?

The Guardian (which I've never seen) cos some bloke in it won a Logie ten years ago.

That British sketch show with John Colshaw (sp?) cos there's a Rolf Harris and Russel Crowe parody in it, even though the rest of the content would be a mystery to your average Australian

Fat Club (or whatever) cos Australian Jonno Coleman is in it

Dossa and Joe at least is set in Australia with Autralian actors

Can't get cable in my area, need a satellite which is more expensive so haven't bothered. However a look at the schedules reveals little of improved content. We have taken to more regularly renting from Blockbuster and are getting through some decent films. Tv is improving (marginally) for the winter, in the summer, when people really are doing better things, it's appalling. Tonight's schedule better than most as there is some choice:
