Europeans have less desire to travel to Australia during season from the start of April to mid July so the return air fare from Europe is dropped to increase demand and maximize utilization of supply.
Over Christmas / New Year demand in both directions is high as are prices.
Outside the Christmas / New Year season demand from Australia is consistent so the price is constant.
During the seasons from mid January to start of April and mid July to mid December the price of air fares is close to the same in both directions.

What you have to remember is that the Aussie public are a fairly docile and easily manipulated breed. The media here is a joke and goes unchallenged, you couldn't get away with this crap in the UK. Australians on the whole don't question or challenge what they are given or told. Also, the majority of Aussies I know believe that if they pay more for a service or product then it must be superior and worth the extra money, it's a completely different mindset to the UK.
They accept second best because a lot of the time they don't realise they are getting second best!

I just dont buy that. The demand is exactly the same....same flight, same seat, same airline, double the price. I can understand the maximising profit thing but DOUBLE the airfare ??? Come on ! I'd be interested to know how many seats are the LHR - PER return route rather than PER-LHR, especially if you took out Brits going home (for good or holiday). not many I'll bet.
Perth biggest increase in traffic...probably the Brits coming here on holiday coz the airfare's so cheap....and immigrants !! (Not so cheap when u get here tho!).
More likely to be the huge increase in FIFO mines as stated elsewhere. The only Aussies I know going to Europe are cashed up from mining or on the back of mining. That's where the money is.

Would have to agree with that. Problem is in oz due to the lack of competition in markets they can get away with charging the prices they do and us poor sods have to pay em. Look at all the duopolies in oz. The government protect aussie brands and make it difficult for foreign competitors to enter the market.
In Australia, foreigners can not use trademarks they do not own and neither can Australians.
