Smile Oz residents - How often do you swim in the sea?

Just wondered how often people in Oz swam in the sea? It's something I love to do wherever I am, but will be interested to see whether people make the time or are put off by temperatures or anything else....

Also please tick the "wetsuit" option at the bottom if you use one to protect against cooler temperatures...

Not very often as it is 3 hours away at least. In the summer we swim in the rivers though and we head to the sea fairly regularly. Generally if you can cope with the sea in England then the sea here is lovely pretty well all year round .

Definitely - I do the open water swims in Victoria in the summer. Its all pretty aggressive ... lots of 40-somethings having one last roll of the competitive dice!

Best regards.

Whereabouts are the swims you speak of Alan - are they near you? Is that on Port Philip Bay or down Torquay way?

I swam in the ocean daily when I lived in Tin Can Bay. Now If it gets warm when I'm fishing I often jump overboard and have a swim around. The water temp up here is warm enough to swim all year round.
I wear a 3 or 5mm wet suit if I'm snorkeling or diving only as protection from the coral or rocks otherwise it's just boardies and a rashie

Not once since we've been here I can swim and love swimming, live five minutes from fab beach but given the choice between swimming in it or just sitting looking at it, give me the latter anyday. Could happily watch it all day, every day Maybe this summer I might get more than my feet wet in it

Now live five mins from the beach ... and I'd say I'm in there five days a week. There again I used to go surfing on New Year's Day in the UK, so 'cool' ocean temperatures don't bother me much.

l live near the beach in Country Victoria, its only warm enough to go swimming 3 months of the year, l go swimming nearly every warm day. Regarding crocs and stingers there are'nt any in the waters of southern Australia, only in the far north of the country. Every year someone drowns along the coast where l live but no one has ever been killed by a shark.

There are a number of open water swims, Buzzy - some on the Mornington Peninsula side of the bay, and others at Torquay, Point Lonsdale, Anglesea, and the big one of course at Lorne.

If you are interested, here's the 2005/06 calendar (that for 2006/07 is expected in the next two to three weeks):

i may be coerced in to doing this...

2 Dec BBX 3 POINTS CHALLENGE
3 Points Challenge – Swim/Run – 3 Ocean swims (total 900m) and 3 cross country runs (total 7km)covering 3 beaches - North Curl Curl / South Curl Curl/ Freshwater. (awesome coastal scenery). Start Time: 10am. This event is unique to North Curl Curl and is the only race of its type in Australia.
.. but i'm not really an ocean swimmer so i'm trying to find an excuse to get out of it

Never been a big beach / sea fan. Burn too easily in those deceptive sea breezes and don't like the feeling of sand mixed with sun cream. Plus I had a good attempt at trying to drown myself in Fiji a couple of years ago which really shook my confidence and I've not been snorkelling since.

I find the seas in Australia a bit too choppy, but if the weather's warm and we're at one of the harbour beaches (hardly no waves) I'll have a paddle.

I took Josh swimming at 5.30am this morning it nearly killed me. I used to swim 40 lengths [2k] in an hour when we first arrived here. I let that go when business picked up, it's now 2 yrs down the track and I really struggled to do 20 lengths this morning.
Now Josh is diving I want him and myself as water fit as possible so it's down to the pool at least 3 times a week before work/school.

Here's the first event of the season down "our way" ... I hasten to add I'm not doing all the disciplines!

Beach is 5mins away so at least every weekend but only been here 9weeks so that may change. Stay in patrolled beaches as they have nets for the stingers :scared:
