Oz PR gives NZ PR as well?
 

Hi all,

Quick question - I've heard that my new shiny Oz PR sticker also gives me the right to live in NZ. Is this true? Seems like someone's BS'ing me :-)

It's true but doesn't work the other way about - ie with Aus PR you can live and work in NZ but with NZ PR you can't do the same in Aus.

I'm not sure that that's true. There's a reciprocal agreement between NZ and Australia on residence and although NZers cannot claim dole in Australia (for 2 years or something) they can still live and work there. I thought that this extended to PR holders as well as citizens...

It's true that NZ citizens can live and work freely in Aus (with welfare restrictions etc) but not NZ PR holders.

Unless anyone knows differently?

Yes Its true, Well at least it was true for me 14 years ago. I gained a PR visa for
Australia. Decided to visit NZ for a wee while before going to OZ, but nether got to
Australia. I was granted PR at Auckland airport. I dont think its changed but you
could maybe call NZ Embassy, High Commission in your area for confirmation.

If you look at http://www.immigration.govt.nz the term used is 'Australian permanent
residents with a valid resident return visa' (or something to that effect. I'm not
sure if new migrants to Australia qualify for this.

Given that NZ citizenship no longer carries full rights in Australia, it makes more
sense in my opinion to settle in Australia and become an Australian citizen
eventually, if you've been granted Australian PR.

indefinitely in New Zealand.

However, certain people do not need to apply for residence to live in New Zealand.
They include:

New Zealand citizens, who must show valid New Zealand passports on entering New
Zealand; and Australian citizens, who must show valid Australian passports on
entering New Zealand; and Australian permanent residents, who must show valid
Australian

Yes, but new migrants to Australia have immigrant visas with a re-entry facility, not
resident return visas (in Australian terms anyhow).

The questions do these qualify for exemption from NZ's normal prcesses
- my suspicion is no (but I'm open to correction).

Thank you for reply but can I ask some questions about RRV?

1. If I get a RRV, what is the subclass of it? Same as one on previous PR sticker?

2. I need to have a new passport issued if my passport is stolen or expired. In such
case, I may be able to have a new PR sticker issued. Is that new PR sticker RRV or
still same as previous one?

RRV has different class (can't recall without checking the Regs) and subclasses (155
and 157) to your migrant visa (which might be a 136, or 138 etc).

A new sticker is the same visa as the original sticker, same expiry date etc.

You normally need to have lived for 2 years (in the last 5) as a permanent resident
in Australia to get a standard 5 year RRV (subclass
155). A subclass 157 RRV is very restricted (one re-entry only, and 3 month
validity).

Unless your migrant visa has passed its expiry date it is generally inadvisable
to apply for an RRV unless you meet the 2 year requirement, as you could end up
with a subclass 157 visa which would leave you worse off than before in terms of
travel freedom.
