Hi,

A bit sad i know, but i was thinking of doing a bit of shopping in Ikea when get to QLD..

just done a bit of price comparison for a few items and the one in Brissie is more expensive than UK...

For example Hemnes Bunk Bed is £200 in Oz and £175 in UK, generally stuff is 10 -15% more....

Someone might find this useful............... probably common sense really.. doing the geography... :rofl:

And add to that, wages in OZ are a fair bit lower than the UK and Ikea starts to look dear.
We've bought loads from there though and it is a nice shop

I think some things are more expensive and others are cheaper. Overall I thinks it's pretty much the same.

we've been pricing everything up (used aus yellow pages to find shops in qld - not massive on ikea) , we're considering selling everything(just sending a few boxes) and starting again. suitcase poms!:eek:
Washing machines on wayout, folk say you don't need a dryer......... we haven't got enough to justify a container.

I found a bed store that had a kids single frame for $99, so that wasn't bad-just got to find a mattress.

If you want nice stuff- you pay! either same price or a bit more:thumbdown:
and yea, put the lower wages, higher mortgage rates and similar tax into equation it's not a rosie picture. It's good to prepare yourself though. Save, save, save....

I think you'll find that most imported goods would be slightly more expensive due to the shipping costs involved.

Ikea is good in the sense that you have every conceivable piece of furniture catered for under one roof, but buying locally manufactured goods would make more economical sense.

Are there retail parks or maybe locals could advise on the best shops giving web details if available?

For those who have only a small amount of furniture to take with them, try yell.com and look under 'groupage'. International removal companies are just 1 of 2 middlemen between you and the shipping line. If you cut out the removal co and go directly to the groupage operator/freight forwarder, you could save?

Not really true. Most of our goods are imported from China now and they are cheaper than locally manufactured goods. That's why they are imported.

OK let me qualify my remark : Good imported from Europe will more than likely be more expensive due to the shipping costs.

Their meatballs and chips are a bargain though!!:p

Although I do find it weird that you take take one of their catalogue'sthough, even weirder still one of their catalogue's managed to find its way into my daughters pushchair ;)

A lot of the stuff in Ikea is not made in Europe but in Asia.

I found it to be about a 3rd more expensive for big items but the small crap you buy just cos its cheap is cheaper than the UK. The food is cheaper - full english brekkie for $2 = 70p. Def not that cheap in the UK!

I rather like the IKEA in perth. Prices are pretty good..........just a bloody nightmare to get parked!

Ikea lakeside two full english, extra mushrooms, large coffee, pot of tea and toast =£2 so the food is not cheaper IMHO ;)

Funny you should mention IKEA, I was doing exactly the same thing last Saturday but in Dubai. Here a sofa bed is equivelant to AUD 600 in Brisbane it's a staggering AUD 899 and extra 299 why:confused:

Maybe people in Dubai have more money to spend than we do?

I'm sure if there was a IKEA in India / Pakistan etc the prices in IKEA would reflect that. ie supply and demand and market rates

Wow, did't expect this much feedback from an ikea thread! :D Some useful info though, we were lookin cos it's all under one roof and in stock (mainly) go with an empty truck and come back with your beds etc!! mmm

Will check out the other website that was recommended, anyone for any others.. nice quality, but not too expensive furniture that will last about 4 + years........
