Could some please tell us how long your British driving license is valid for. Do you still have to take a theory and practical test after three months?

Thank you in advance.

Colin and Helen.

I believe it's 3 months.
I've been in Australia over a year now and haven't driven, I'm about to take my written test, following that I will then need to pass a practical test as well.
I'm pretty sure that if you get an international licence you may drive on it for a year, then have to take the 2 tests.

I think it varies from state to state, so try which ever of the below applies:

We were recently on holiday in Australia and the same topic of conversation came up. Our relatives who recently emigrated found out that a British driving licence can now be exchanged for an Australian one without any tests. I know the rules vary from state to state - they are based in Melbourne.

Thanks everyone.

We're hoping to go to Melbourne, so it sounds like we can just exchange - excellent.

Hi Colin and Helen.

As one who had to pass the VicRoads driving test (drive and multiple choice tests)
last June I wouldn't be so sure about just exchanging your UK licence for a
VicRoads one.

So far as I know you now only have to pass a knowledge test and don't have to do the
drive (if you are from the UK). See:

into your browser).

Best regards.

Hi

In Queensland, it's definitely 3 months from entry into the country. The test is 30
questions......very easy if you're from the U.K except for road junction/crossroads
as it's mostly traffic lights in the U.K. Only a theory test required. Even my wife
said it was easy and she was dreading it. Buy the Queensland highway code book for
$8, read for 8 hours and just walk in to a Queensland transport office and do the
test. It reminds me of the post offices in the U.K. Very relaxed. If you don't pass
you have to wait until the next day to resit.

Hi Mark, are you still waiting??? You applied ages ago didn't you?

Anyhow, In queensland, the test costs nothing (yes nothing) until you pass when you
can choose which how long you want your licence for i.e. 1-5 years. I chose the 5
year which cost (if I can remember) around $55. You just renew every 5 years without
further testing.

Good Luck

And then the licence costs (currently) A$39 for a 3-year licence, A$133 for a
10-year licence.

The licence is actually really useful, as it carries your photo (the piccie is taken
once you've passed your test) and can be used when checking in for flights booked
online (for example). Not that I'm advocating personal ID cards you understand ....

Mark

If you're buying a car from a dealer, they do a Queensland Warranty (between 1 & 3
years) which costs a little extra in case some things go wrong. However, I did this
and it's a bit of a con. I tried to claim 3 times in the first month ( total cost
of repairs $2100) and every time they quoted some exclusion cause or another. You
also have to have your car serviced every 5000km and forward confirmation of the
service to them.

I headed for the Gold Coast as well, Beautiful, but I moving to Harvey Bay
shortly to work.

Good luck

Wayne
