IT in Oz
 

Can anyone advise of how the IT job market is looking in Oz at present. I was told previously that although the Australian Government were encouraging IT professionals to migrate to Oz in reality the job market was very slow, especially for new migrants.

hey my exp. is mix of good and bad. BTW what fields you are looking at. You should prepare yourself from 1 month to couple of months to get job that can make you happy provided you are looking in domains that are specialized. What is your quest and field. Can you give us the specifics on your background. Are you ok with anytype of role or you are keen to get into more specific field.. All the job outcome will be based on your expectations. The outcome can be fast yeilding or furstating sometimes.

We got to Perth in mid June. Im a mid to senior level VB and SQL server developer and I got 3 job offers in the range of $63,000 - $65,000 within 2 weeks of looking. On the other hand, my hubbie is a junior to mid level Windows NT Helpdesk/support/admin person and he has only had 2 interviews in 6 weeks of looking, both turned him down.

So I guess maybe it depends on where you go, what you do, and how 'senior' you are. And apparently, so I've been told by many agencies, the best time to be looking is July to Sept (start of financial year) and Jan to Feb (rush after Xmas).

Ooh They are paying that much for a VB & SQL programmer :eek:
I am a specialzed person on Storage, Networking(on good no. of protocols) and Embedded. Core Software Developer on C and C++ worked different Unix flavours and Windows (VC++). But in Melbourne I think they dont need specialzed person. :(
Everyone seems pushing me to System Engineer role insted of Software. And you will be afraid to hear that one of the consulting agency called me up to tell me not to apply through their web-site anymore since they have my resume in database. I nice way to telling me dont bug us plz. I was shocked by this since it was they who first told me to go look on website and apply if any open positions are there. WTF.. :eek:

I am a Network Support Analyst specialising in largely Microsoft products such as Windows 2003, 2000, XP, SMS etc, etc. I used to be a developer but that was a few years ago and I think the languages I specialised in are well out of date now. To be honest I would be quite happy to take a desktop support role and see how things go.

We were originally thinking of heading to Melbourne but I think now we are more likely to head to Sydney, mainly because we know more people in Sydney than anywhere else (both Australian & British).

You will fare well if you are open to look for more challeges... And I see your type of role are best suited to both sydney and Melb both. So Chhers.

I cant speak about the rest of the country, but in Perth its pretty bouyant at the moment. I work in IT recruitment and we're flat out at the moment.
We're more focused on the Contract side but I know Perm's are also doing well.
If you have all the desirable attributes you would have no problem getting a contract support role in Perth.
Much better lifestyle than Sydney ;)

Could you let us know what skills are most in demand?

I am planning to head out to Melbourne and would be interested in how much work there is for team leading and technical director type roles or senior development in C++/UNIX/C# & C++ .NET/Oracle/mySql etc.

Thanks for the info. Perth does look very nice but I think our friends in Sydney would never forgive us if we moved to Oz and didn't go there.

In your experience do Australians companies insist on Microsoft accreditation. Although I have not currently taken any exams, I'm sure I could knock up a few during the long visa application process. Also I was told by a friend who works in IT in Brisbane that a lot of companies do not consider work experience from the UK as relevant and are unwilling to offer positions based on IT experience gained outside of Australia. Is this something you have found ?

There was an article in one of the Aussie newspapers on line today saying that Aussie IT graduates are struggling to find work as there are so many IT specialists emigrating. I will let you know where if I find it again.
