Our car hit, guilty party drove off - what next?
Some total sh1t reversed into our car today causing a fair amount of damage and then drove off. He must have known as the damage is considerable. Fortunately a witness got the rego. Mrs Haggis is heading off to the local police station to report it now.
Does anyone know what happens now ? Do the police pursue the driver etc ? Is there anything else we need to do ? Our insurance company has been worse than useless and simply told us to call police and submit a claim - but we pay $500 excess !

Unless you want to pay for the damage yourself put in the claim form. Any decent insurance firm will use the rego number to trace the culprit. However if they are uninsured you will have to pay the excess and take civil action to recover your money as well as the loss of no claim bonus, if any.

would have thought your insurance co' would persue claim against driver, as long as the witness got the right reggo & will do a statement for you. Our Insurers won't make you pay the excess if its clearly not your fault & you can manage to get an address for the third party.

Nice one ! Mrs Haggis has just returned from the police and it seems the rego is wrong. They called the witness who thought it was the right one. Police will play around with the numbers but if no joy we'll have to pay ourselves or claim on insurance and play the $500 excess. Grrr.
