Default OTT: Telling if a phone is unlocked

aside from trying a different brand sim card in it, is there a way to tell if a mobile phone is 'unlocked'?

thanks people

Take it to OZ/NZ and if it doesn't work it is probably locked

Don't know the answer so lets bump this one.

there may be a way of finding out without inserting a different brand sim, but this would probably be the easiest way.

Depending on the phone, you can get software that will interrogate it and tell you if it is locked or not. For that you will need to do a google search for the make of phone.

The downside is that you will most probably need a specialist serial cable which will probably range anywhere from £10 - £25 depending on make of phone.

My advice............get a sim from a mate on a different network.

When I unlocked mine it actually said 'phone unlocked' after I had put the code in. Then I tested it with another sim and it works fine.

Do this before you come out it will be a lot easier, you have enough to do when you arrive here!
