OT: Computer problem -Help please!!

Hi guys

Im not very good with computers but can anyone advise on following:-

Error message to effect that - my computer has a fatal error at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM (01) caused by Trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c

Can anyone help - we are leaving soon and need the convenience of home internet access (well family's computer!).

Any free!! programs we can use - previous "free" programs always ask for registration/payment before job is completed - and I feel uncomfortable using cards etc on the computer with this problem.

Any help suggestions gratefully received.

regards

atticus

Hi atticus

Go to www.grisoft.com and download their free software for personal use. Otherwise you could always download a free trial of the full software.

You could also have a look at Panda Software

It is a free ON LINE scan facility, just click the bit that says: Scan Your PC.

You can also download a trial version that lasts for 1 month, and includes one free update during that period.

NedKelly, can you give the link for the free one on grisoft, as I couldn't see it there. Thanks

Looks like a hard one to get rid of and I cannot verify the effectivness or safety of the clearup. All I can advise is backup your documents in case.

I run Windows2000 and have this program for anti-virus software: http://www.free-av.com/

It's free for private use (genuinely) and the virus definitions are updated regularly.

I believe it will also work on other operating systems.

He's already got the virus, so those anti-virus programs aren't going to remove the infection now, the geek site is probably the best help online for free, and haven't seen anything go horrifically wrong there before...

But once that's all done, get the antivirus, AVG/Avant are both good ones' with daily updates...someone already put the link up, but another good one is: http://www.free-av.com/

A big thank you to everyone for being kind enough to take the time to respond with fab advice and much needed links. I am pleased to say having used NedKelly's link (thank you so much) that I downloaded a 30 day trial of (I think it was) av grift or something and it has done the trick - although I had to reload my broadband stuff - so hence delay in responding to you guys!

So thank you so much.

Its the family computer so may have to cut down on access to this site as its seems whenever we use this site we get the most pop ups and other problems.

atticus
