OT: British Beer vs Australian Beer
stemming from another thread, and a topic very close to my heart.....
Just want to find out, from people who are "qualified" drinkers of beer in a global sense, what is the Ale of Choice ? No patriotism please, this isnt meant to be a "which is the best country".......
1) British Ale (either bitter or lager or stout)
2) Australian beer (either lager, lager, lager or....errr....fizzy stuff)
Its probably the greatest thing missed by expats and Australians who have spent time in the UK and that I have met.
Anyway, just wanted to find out !

Some of the imported beers here taste nothing like the original, I had a go
at some Tetleys Bitter the other night here in SA and it tasted nothing
like!
I do enjoy the local Coopers brews, they have several different styles,my
favourite is Coopers Pale Ale or for just the odd one or two Coopers Dark
Ale.
Plenty of choices here.

If you like beer and such , try KilKenny, most bottle shops in Australia sell it, or any of the Irish pubs.
Another OK lager in Aus - is Toohies Old (spell check)... not the "new" - the "old".
cheers

Having said that, there is a lot more variety in the UK and my vote goes there...not found anything to quite rival a top class pint of Thwaites bitter from Blackburn yet!

Australian - not because it tastes better but because you stand 50 times better chance of needing one to cool down on a hot day.

I think if anything drives me over the brink into insanity in Oz it's going to be the total lack of a decent pint. Even when they do make a brew with a hint of flavour (Coopers Pale, Boag's, Cascade) they insist on serving it so cold that it almost could almost be presented on a stick!
Seriously though, there are some good microbreweries springing up and if the worst comes to the worst bottled Bass is available and drinkable.
For a giggle I recommend:

Part of the BBC Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy site.

VB = bad hangover and does not settle well on the stomach the morning after
if you know what I mean!
The wife swears by Carlton Cold
I hate to admit it though nothing beats a 4x stubby. As much as I hate to
say it! (as I am just about to emigrate to Victoria, Au). I would never
even consider drinking it hear in UK. Probably something to do with the
beer being really cold and the temperature really hot!
A pint of Boddingtons in an Irish Pub (such as Bridey O'Reileys in Chapel
Street, Melbourne) isn't too bad when your feeling a little homesick!!!
Cheers

Having invested a lot of time and money in this subject , my opinion for whats it worth is in order of merit.
1.Guiness Stout
2.Boddingtons
3.Marstons Pedigree
All Aussies beers equal last , my liver tells me they are better off left to chemical junkies , only lagers worth drinking are from Europe .

Swan used to do a great lager called Black Label - a cut above your average lager, absolutely delicious and full flavoured. Still going strong anyone?
