Default original packaging please help

we have known for the last three yrs that we were going to Oz so every thing that we have bought in that time we have kept the original boxes for.
Reading the posts on here, it seams that if things look new then you have to pay tax on them in Oz. We have two 50inch plasmas over a year old and have kept the boxes to transport them in but if were gonna pay gst on them then should we use the boxes or not?
We would rather send them in the boxes as we believe it will be safer than without.
Whats your verdict

Hiya,

I would say place your items back in the original boxes, as long as the goods are over 12 months old, they cant charge you. Its your responsibility to tell them if there is something 'newish' or not. if the customs were to charge you then you would certainly get it back on reinspection. There again, would you want the hassle, would it be a hassle?

Personally I would go for it!

Cheers

Have you kept the receipts with dates of purchase on? If yes just pack them up and if they query you can supply the receipt with date - or tape a photocopy onto the box for them to see with date highlighted perhaps?

Personally I would package them in original boxes - more secure and worry about any problems as and when they arise - you know you are in the right!

Good luck

Paula

Hi
I have two computers I am shipping, both are just over 12 months old both of which I am packing in their original boxes. I had thought about this too and decided to stick a photo copy of the receipts to the boxes. It will probably save any hassle in the long run.....I hope.

all the removals companies I had round said they will use any original packing we had. As long as they put the items in it will count as professionally packed. They said disputes rarely arise over household effects, unless it is obvious you are bringing in several dysons (or whatever) and they think you will sell them on.

i wish we kept the original packing for our 42" plasma
the shippers are recommending that they make a custom crate for it at £60 :scared:

My OH always saved every original box for his computer stuff, tv's, amp, xboxes etc, the loft was full of em ... anyway we used them and had no trouble at all. Also shipped over my month old washer/dryer and other bits and bobs that were not quite 12 months old with no problem.

Check the back of your tv's. Our LCD has the manufacture date on it. Problem solved for us. We didn't keep the original box and had to have a crate made up too .

we used the original packaging for tv, computer, hifi etc some of which were less than 12 months old and nothing was queried by customs-the only things inspected were the dyson and our bikes in case either had nasty foreign goo attached.

We've kept packaging for lots of things and have it all in the loft. We'll probably use a lot of it I should think.
