Default Opening HSBC account

Just wondering if anyone has just walked into an HSBC in OZ and opened an account there and then. If so, what documents, ID were required. we are heading to Brisbane (via Sydney) on Friday to validate my partner's visa. will be out there for 4 days, and thought we'd take the opportunity of opening bank accounts, applying for tax file numbers, that sort of thing.

hi

I am doing the same next week in Perth. I was advised to take
a $2000 bank draft made out in auss dollars. Let you know if
it works.

Hiya
Just incase someone is wondering about opening an Aus account in the Uk. I rang HSBC today and they are sending me a special pack, so we can have it all ready before we go.

We're just opening one through Barclays and the ANZ. Barclays have sent us the paperwork, and are now processing it. Once open they will transfer the money from our current Barclays account at the daily rate which is 2.6 ish now for a cost of around £30. Seems pretty good but I think they all must be quite competitive.

Yes done it at HSBC in Sydney. Just walk in with your passport and aus $ 2000. Takes about 5 mins and all the cards etc were posted to our UK address in about a fortnight.

Why apply for a TFN ? As I understand it you need a Aus address and they will expect a tax return from you this tax year. You can do it online very easily - best wait until you are there for good unless you start work as soon as you arrive.
