Default Opening bank accounts from UK

To those who are resident and those about to depart.......
What are your experiences of opening accounts with banks prior to emmigration? I notice NAB have a advertisment on this site but just wondering what pros and cons there were?
Is it worth it or is it best to maintain uk account until arrival?
Any info much appreciated
Paul.

Keep your UK account anyway... useful for paying for presents, etc for family/friends back in Blighty when you're here... Easy as to open an account... We did Westpac online... Think pretty much all the banks do it online...

We're with the NAB. They are very good and have heaps of branches.

We will be keeping our UK accounts but opened a Westpac account online to use in Oz. So easy to do, all online, then when you get your account number through the post you ring them up and ask for internet passwords etc. All done there and then (24hr service so no need to check time). We then transfered money via moneycorp and checked our balance online. They also wrote to us to let us know money had reached account.

I'm impressed so far.

HSBC in Oz allow you to open from the UK if you are an HSBC/FirstDirect customer. They don't charge any fees either.
