Default Opening Aussie bank account on reccie trip

Has anyone opened a bank account on a reccie trip, (at for example, Commonwealth Bank or Westpac), with a non-Australian address? (and telling the bank that you were still a 'non-resident for tax purposes').

Were you able to get an ATM card and access to your Internet banking, while on that trip? How long did it take?

Did they deliver the ATM card to the same branch where you signed up, or were they willing to mail it to your address abroad?

We opened an OZ bank account whilst on our reccie to Perth. We had to show the banker our passports and open the account with some money. Not much.
But we gave them an aussie address (inlaws already lived there) so not sure how you go about opening one with an overseas address. Can't see why not as we now live in UK and have kept our bank account in Perth open with new UK address.
ATM card was delivered to OZ address.

Opened an Anz account whilst on reccie in melbourne, used my UK address no problem, get sent statements to the UK, and set up account with only 10 dollars. The assistant could not have given me better service! Took in driving licence, UK utility bill and passport, not sure if i needed all of them but took them specifically with me for this job.And the bank itself is stunning inside and out,(Gothic incase youre interested).Couldnt take pics of course of the inside , which is a shame but then it is a bank

chris1386, were you able to get your ATM card and access to your account via Internet banking while you were there?

Hey There

We opened an account with commonwealth while on our reccie and they couldnt be more helpful. They will set you up so you can use your online account and transfer money into it. But you will have to wait till you get back to pick up your cards.

We opened two accounts (ordinary and saver) with Westpac over the phone from the UK with a UK address as non-residents. Got internet banking and telephone banking set up during the same phone call.

We picked up our ATM cards (actually they are debit mastercards) on the day we arrived in Perth from the UK. You shouldn't have any problem doing it during a reccie trip in person.

If you want to so it by phone, search for a thread started by TechnoFreak, he explained how to do it (number to phone etc).

You can always do it from the UK with CBA - we did before we moved out and got great service!

I see they have a branch or an office in the UK. Does that mean I can transfer our funds to that account before we leave and there won't be any hefty fees to pay?

Yep. You open a London transfer account and you secure an exchange rate. They open an Oz account for u and when you'ra ready they send it down under. Worked really well for us when we moved out.

Give them a call for all the info... They also have an open day every few months so u can rock up with a big list of questions.
