Good luck
I must admit I don't miss the fee's that Australian banks charge you and the lack really of "local" choice of banks. Good luck with everything if you can shop around for banks that charge you less fee's but give yourself time to settle in first.

There's plently of local banks, including 4 big ones. Fees are certainly only for the bogan. Still I wouldn't go near a local aussie bank with any serious money.

I would go with HSBC, they were great in Australia and have been here as well.

HSBC seems to be the bank that's mentioned most positively.

Has anyone ever had any problems with them?

In the UK yes, they were crap. First Direct however are superb which is kind of odd when you think about it.

There's bound to be people that have had problems of course but as I say both here and in Australia they have been excellent. The only real issue I had in Australia was that the bank was in a Chinese area and all the staff were Chinese speakers first and it was sometimes difficult to understand and be understood.

They wouldn't give me a mortgage in the UK whilst living in Oz. I was told this throw bullet proof glass in a tin pot 2 horse village in Surrey. Then again none of the high street banks in the UK will either. No other complaints. They make me coffee in the Sydney branch.

I have found their online security including their little keypad thingy very reassuring.

I am afraid that HSBC have weak customer service. Ask a banking question much beyond how many cents in a $ and they struggle. Call centre also weak unless you happen to speak mandarin as you struggle to understand what is being said.
