Hi,
I am from India and obtained Australian PR recently. I have decided to travel to and settle down in Melbourne and look for a job in the Insurance industry where I specialize.

Since this will be my first trip to Australia, and I will be carrying a good amount of baggage, any suggestion on airlines that offer excess baggage for permanent residents migrating on a one way ticket to Melbourne from Delhi? Any suggestions will be helpful. I tried contacting IOM (as mentioned in the Visa grant letter) but they quoted a fare of USD 750 with 40Kgs baggage allowance which seems to be high as a one way fare.

I plan to travel in mid-May, 2013 (DEL-MEL). Thanks.

try contacting other airlines if they have similar packages for first migrants. i think singapore air may have one.

I think emirates offer extra for one way PR also

If you are the kind who will want to go back for a home visit every year you might instead want to get annual return tickets originating from India. Return tickets originating from Australia cost an arm and a leg!

Shop around if you don't like the price. I did a quick search on expedia.com and there were quite a few flights cheaper.

Thanks all for your responses. I found out that China Eastern offers flights from India via Shanghai and offers 2 pieces of 23 kgs each in Economy for flights to Australia ie w whopping 46Kgs of checked in + 7 Kg hand baggage. Hope this helps anyone with a similar situation. Cheers!

First of all I think you're going to have a lot more baggage than ANY economy allowance. So if your case I'd look for an airline that charges small rates for extra bags and stay away from those that charge exorbitant rates by the kilo.

Singapore Airlines will charge you per kg and it won't look pretty. But British Airways has a very good luggage policy with flat rates per piece, and the costs are very small indeed. I would go with BA and pre-pay whatever extra bags you need to bring - this is by far the cheapest way.

That's a blast from the past. If I recall, BA would only allow one item per person in the hold without paying extra. That single item could be as big as a large office desk. We got around that hurdle by strapping two suitcases together!

BA is definitely your friend if you plan on taking lots of extra pieces of luggage.

As for one-way tickets, I'm not sure I'd recommend them as not only are they more expensive (even if you were to get a special PR rate which I don't think exists), but in the future buying tix with travel originating out of SYD would also hit your wallet harder.

Take Singapore for instance, it's much cheaper to buy return tickets from SIN to SYD than the other way around. But it all depends on your needs. If you are definitely not going to be flying out of Australia for a long while then having a return leg might be of no use for you.

I've lived in Singapore for a while now and I always buy my Europe-SIN return tickets with travel originating in Europe as it's simply cheaper that way. A bit more planning of course, but this works for me. The only time I buy tickets starting in SIN is for vacations or trips that I take in the meantime. Once in Sydney I will probably take a similar approach, especially after my recent trip where there were very big differences in fares depending on the originating city.
