A PERTH man serving a 10-year jail term in Thailand for a $1630 crime will be the first Australian prisoner allowed to end his sentence in his home country.
John Doran, 34, has already spent more than five years in a Thai jail for travellers cheque fraud.
The federal government today announced Doran's repatriation under the International Transfer of Prisoners Scheme.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison said Doran was Australia's first prisoner to be transferred under a bilateral exchange treaty with Thailand.
"The aim of the scheme is to allow prisoners to serve out their sentences without language and cultural barriers which may reduce their prospects of rehabilitation," Senator Ellison said.
Doran is expected to arrive in Perth on a commercial flight from Thailand tonight, escorted by two West Australian Justice Department officers.
