Ok, sorry guys another DOG question.

I have done a search and not really found what i am looking for.

Do we need to get our dog a Pet Passport before taking her to OZ?

I know we need one to bring her back to the UK, but do you need it to get into Oz?

Also, does anyone know, if i get one in the Uk will it still be valid incase we come back or will we need to go through the tests again taking another 3 months.

It's just we got her in Spain and she had to do 6 months quarentine in the Uk and thats not something i'd like to put her through again if it can be prevented (i am aware she will have to do a short stint in Oz)

Thanks .

Hi - there are lots of threads about this if you search.
Search 'erlichia' and lots will come up.

It's a long and expensive process to get your dog to Australia .
I've had to get mine chipped and I had to miss out one of the vaccinations incase it showed at the dogs medical prior to flying.
I can't remember all the details but there are plenty of threads about it :)

You dont need a pet passport as this is for pet travel within europe and it enables animals to come back into the uk without having to do the 6 month stint in quarantine(however it takes about 3 months to get a pet passport and there are restrictions in place such as your dog needs to have tick treatment done 24 hours before returning into the uk and this must be certified by a veterinary surgeon). If you take your dog to australia you need to firstly obtain an import permit, from there you can book the quarantin space with the permit number. Your dog needs to be microchipped with an iso compatible chip(most are) and up to date vaccines. The vaccines a dog gets in the UK are usually for diptheria, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. The dog needs to have a blood test before entering australia for leptospirosis, at 30 days before then i think its 14 days before, something like that. The problem is if your dog has had the lepto part of the vaccine this can sometimes give a positive test result. In this case the dog would have to be re-tested with can be lengthy not to mention costly! it is best to not to have had the lepto part of the vaccine within the last six months. i am having my dogs booster done in march without the lepto. Lepto is a risk in Britain but not so much that i am concerned about my dogs getting it. I have worked in veterinary practices for 6 years and have seen one case, so i wouldnt be overly concerned on that aspect. You also need to obtain a DEFRA export certificate which has to be completed by a veterinary surgeon approved by DEFRA(most practices have one if not more) and theres worming treatments also that need to be carried out. Your best bet is to measure your dog, phone around a couple of shipping companies(im still trying to decide which one to use but im swaying towards golden arrow!) most companies will send you a lond list of all the exact requirements needed and some companies will do almost all of it for you but you pay for what you get so its often more expensive! hope this helps!:D

Well I certainly recomend Golden arrow. Our dog was supposed to be flying on Sunday. She failed her lepto (well was possitive if you know what I mean), she had it redone and it was fine, but our house hasn't exchnaged when we thought it would have done by now. Golden Arrow have been absolutly excellent. They have had the flight changed to Tuesday for us, so we are now going to take her down on Monday morning and then hang around the area until we have heared that our house has exchanged, otherwise we will take her home again.
They really have been so great, I can't recomend them enough. Such friendly people too.

Speak to a professional shipping agent like www.airpets.co.uk (which I can recommend personally)

Your pet passport means nothing in Australia as posted above. There are specific Australian requirements for importation of a dog.

Thanks guys for all of your replies
I was aware the passport was for the EU but when i spoke to DEFRA (regarding her import from Spain) and mentioned my plans they told me i would need it to bring her back to the Uk from Oz....hence the confusion.

We have her microchipped already and she has hadd all her inoculations plus her first booster the other day and were not planning on going until Oct ish so didnt knowwhether i needed to start her passport or not.

I will get in touch with your recommendations, thanks again for your help.:)

I looked this up at the weekend and apparently oz is now one of the countries listed in the pet passport scheme(changes constantly) if you were bringing your dog back to uk within 6 months then it prob is worth getting one, id speak to the shipping company though as this is what they specialise in!:D

Make sure you don't have lepto in any further boosters! Everything else is pretty easy especially if you ahve a good export kennels, they guide you through it all. (It is very expensive tho'! We had our girls pet passported as we don't know for sure if we are coming back or not- that way they can travel back with us)

Hi you are right you will need to have a passport for your dog if you ever want to take her back to the UK from any where in the world without her having to spend time in UK quarantine. We left the UK September to come to OZ and got our dog her passport - the local vet were brilliant they knew exactly what she had to have and when including the rabies jabs - having now arrived in OZ took her for a check up and was informed that to keep up the rabies jabs we would have to travel north of the sunshine coast as only certain vets here are allowed to give it - no major problems as it only has to be given once every 3 years. good luck with everything and safe trip. hope this was of some use to u:thumbsup:

Travelling the north of the Sunshine Coast every three years for rabies jabs sounds like a pretty good excuse for a holiday to me, yey road trip lol:D
