Lightbulb OK, so who REALLY knows the words to the National Anthem?

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains the let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

(The lost verse)
With Christ our head and cornerstone,
We'll build our Nation's might.
Whose way and truth and light alone
Can guide our path aright.
Our lives, a sacrifice of love, reflect our Master's care.
With faces turned to heaven above, Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.

Now here's a decent song for a national anthem:

[1]
I came from the dreamtime from the dusty red soil plains
I am the ancient heart, the keeper of the flame
I stood upon the rocky shore
I watched the tall ships come
For forty thousand years I'd been the first Australian.

[2]
I came upon the prison ship bowed down by iron chains.
I cleared the land, endured the lash and waited for the rains.
I'm a settler.
I'm a farmer's wife on a dry and barren run
A convict then a free man I became Australian.

[3]
I'm the daughter of a digger who sought the mother lode
The girl became a woman on the long and dusty road
I'm a child of the depression
I saw the good times come
I'm a bushy, I'm a battler
I am Australian

[chorus]
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.

[4]

I'm a teller of stories
I'm a singer of songs
I am Albert Namatjira
I paint the ghostly gums
I am Clancy on his horse
I'm Ned Kelly on the run
I'm the one who waltzed Matilda
I am Australian
[5]

I'm the hot wind from the desert
I'm the black soil of the plains
I'm the mountains and the valleys
I'm the drought and flooding rains
I am the rock, I am the sky
The rivers when they run
The spirit of this great land
I am Australian
[chorus]

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Australian
I am, you are, we are Australian.

They only need learn the first verse.

If most Aussies knwe the content of the other verses they'd change the anthem to Walzing Matilda overnight...

I was just thinking that myself

Now I know why they use a shortened version

Our boys, in year 1, learnt this in the first month at school, taught to them in class & they sing it at assembly each week. One of them spent all of his waking hours every day for weeks singing the damn thing over & over again until I tried to cut his vocal chords out with a rusty razorblade . He still spontaneously bursts into song about half a dozen times a day .

Jayr, I do like that song very much, but for gut wrentching soppiness I have to agree with owieb & Di, Peter Allen takes the cake everytime!

I've been to cities that never close down,
from New York to Rio and old London town,
But no matter how far or how wide I roam,
I still call Australia home.

I'm always trav'lin, I love being free,
and so I keep leaving the sun and the sea,
But my heart lies waiting over the foam,
I still call Australia home.

All the sons and daughters, spinning 'round the world,
away from their family and friends,
But as the world gets older and colder,
it's good to know where your journey ends.

But some day we'll all be together once more,
when all of the ships came back to the shore,
I realise something I've always known,
I still call Australia home.

But no matter how far or how wide I roam,
I realize something I've always known,
I still call Australia, I still call Australia,
I still call Australia Home.

I know the first verse. Sang it every week at assembly through primary school.

Those other two songs are nicer, but all three beat the Dutch national anthem (of which I maybe only know the first line)

My favourite one is the 'I am Australian' one. I love the text!

50 years out of date - needs another verse or two.

I shop in Bondi Junction,
And sup at Cremorne,
I'm a cafeholic, shopaholic,
For that I was bourne,
And when I want some fun,
I switch on Foxtel,
And watch all night porn.

Apologies to poets - the subject matter is hardly worth the verse.
