Default Is it OK to leave debt behind in the UK

This is a hot topic at the moment so I think it merits a poll!

I would say that's it better for the old peace of mind not to, but in certain circumstances such as ours we had little choice.

Mr Pookin had debts (still does) which he was merrily paying off expecting to have a good year or more to do so.

When we were processed in 2 months and then told that because our Oz police clearances ran out in 2 months we had to be in Oz in 2 months, we just packed up and went. We could have risked re-applying if not.

Luckily I had enough to see us through a good 6-8 months (and back up at home) and now we have work so all is OK.

All I will say is do have enough to live on for a fair while. Setting up is expensive even if you are a Good Sammy guru. Getting jobs very quickly is not easy for the majority.

pookin, I think your comments & situation are fair enough, but I think renth is referring to the student debt thread where people are leaving the country with no intention of ever repaying the loan.

Maybe the poll should have been 'Is it okay to default on your UK debts by running away'?

There's nothing wrong with having debts in the UK if you intend to pay them.

Well said DUP; some of us had no way of paying off debts (not talking about student loans) before leaving the UK. That doesn't mean there is no intention of paying; in my case the problem I am having is getting some places to actually accept the money! I have a personal loan which I am trying to pay, and they just won't answer my letters! Apparently when the word "abroad" is mentioned, the "too difficult" light comes onand the paperwork goes to the bottom of the pile again! Likewise Seeboard, who owe me £52 on my closed electric account, but say they can't pay it to me, it has to be transferred to my electric account at my new address.....
