Hi,

My husband is an Electrical Engineering currently working as a project manager for the construction industry. I am due to graduate from university in 2009 and hope to do some form of archaeology based job, can anyone advise of wages?

Electrical engineer in Perth - $150-250k. Slightly less in Qld. A lot less in NSW, Vic and SA.
Archeology - Have not got a clue but probably very poorly paid.

Wonder if anyone can help.
I currently work as an ICT techncian within primary schools in UK.
Any idea of salary in Adelaide? Not fussed about sticking to education, but this is where my experience has been.
Any ideas if this is a govt job in Adelaide, or service provided by 3rd party?
In UK i work for a company who supports 90 schools, and wondered if this is same in Oz, or is it govt only???
any help gratefully received.

Hello,

I'm due to start a new job in Sydney shortly and I'm having difficulty working out what my net take home pay will be. The ato website is a little confusing and I can't be sure whether it is including medicare levy etc and whether I should include my super payments.

Our family income will be $165k + 9% super, any idea how much the net take home will be? I'm trying to work out how much I can afford to spend on rent as I'll be the only wage earner supporting a wife and two young children.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm been looking at sites for childcare and it took ages but found some sites but these are for Adelaide but they may have places in QLD. Try ABC and Select education that have ads for jobs too. I will just be a plain old carecare assistant as only have NVQ2 but pay for this has ranged from $16-$25.

Your take home pay will be approx $2089 per week assuming you have private hospital cover, if you don't then it will be $2058 as you will have to pay an extra 1% medicare levy.

Your super doesn't affect your tax at all, and you will get $14,850 per annum contributed to your super fund.

I am interested in moving to Oz. My wife is a midwife and I am a Chartered Surveyor. I can't see many jobs for a surveyor and I am 46 therefore I would use my wifes job to get in as she is 41. We also have 3 kids so it is extremely important that we are clear this move would improve our quality of life which I'm sure is the same for everyone else. Assuming my wife would get a full time job first and I would deal with the kids that would suggest a salary of $50,000. From background info I think the monthly costs are:

Renting $1500
Food $1500
petrol $600
Rates $500
Insurances $200
Extras $500

Total = $4800

On a single salary of $50,000($3000/month)

How can you survive? we would like to move but are on a joint salary of £70,000 and don't feel well off. The sun can't compensate for everything.

Any thoughts on this? are my figures wrong for a family of five?

On $50k per year it is pretty borderline. You would qualify for family tax benefit and rent assistance (www.centrelink.gov.au) which would help a little. However if you are used to £70k per year, I think you'd find it pretty tough going. It would probably be alright for a few months until you get settled, but to sustain your current standard of living you would need a lot more than that.

Rent - really depends where you live, you may pay less but you may also pay more. It's hard to say without knowing where you are going and what type of house you are looking at.

Food - Depends again, we spend $150 per week on 4 of us, I know people who spend a lot more than that.

Petrol - depends on car size and how much travelling you do. My OH spends 20 minutes a day travelling to work and the same back - he puts $60 a fortnight in his car (Ford Falcon 4 litre). If he uses my car (barina 1.6) then it's cut down to just $40 per fortnight.

Rates - vary considerable from state to state. There's a thread about rates in QLD on the forum and it seems quite high there. We pay $710 per year in SA on 911 square meters.

Insurance - My insurance costs are: Car - $400 per annum (for both cars) Life $35 per month each ($250k worth of cover) House and contents $500 per annum.

Extra's - they can be lots, or they can be a little.

Any licenced aircraft engineers out there (big planes).not propeller. What would the average wage be, and where do you look to find jobs for that profession, if you dont mind me asking.

Unfortunately, I think you would struggle on that wage for a family of 5.

However, you wouldn't pay rates if you are renting as it is included in the rent.

I can only speak for WA but your budget for food costs seems quite low. I spend more than that for 3 of us and I shop very carefully. I would say you need at least another $200pm for food and that is being careful. Food costs are what has caught me out the most.

What are you including in extras? Essentials are gas, electric, phone and water usage then you might want broadband (probably essential with your job) and foxtel. Don't forget mobile phones, school donations, activites for the kids. It soon adds up.

Edit: ok ok 2 pms asking if I'm a millionaire because I spend $1700 pm on food. Ha ha guys far from it!!! Just ignore what I put about food - I read your food bill as $600 not $1500.

Food - agree with NB - about $1200pm so that gives you $300 you've overbudgeted on food and no rates to pay giving you over estimate of $800 ish. Still think you will struggle though. Good luck

Bloody hell, I spend between $250 and $300 per week for a family of 4, what on earth are you planning on buying! Amongst most of my friends we spend a similar amount so $1500 in my view would be more than adequate.

My Gawdddddd!!! wow if i could feed my family(5 of us) on $150 i would be wetting myself,it cost me without a doubt $300 aweek plus all extras in the week for bread milk etc.
I must be budgeting wrong lol, i think the price of food shopping is high, you really do have to be carefull on what you buy and try to cut back but thats with me cutting back!!!!!
So need to know how you do it!!! hahaha cheers

$1500 per month not $150 a week. I spend between $250 and $300 on my normal weekly shop. That isn't accounting the bits and bobs in between although I do stock the freezer up with bread and milk so don't normally run out.
