Re: the official jobs/wages thread...
Is it? I thought Australian wages were "crap." That's what people keep telling me. So I can only assume that $3500 gross a week is "crap."
After all, if sassenach and his OH can only survive on a joint wage of $3500 gross per week by "applied effort and sacrifice", then $3500 must be extremely "crap" indeed.

Re: the official jobs/wages thread...
Hi all - looking at an employer sponsored opportunity in Melbourne, paying around $82k, which will have to support wife and two kids. Is this a good salary? What would the take-home be?

Re: the official jobs/wages thread...
Take home pay would be $62,100 (which is more than we earn before tax )
Can't say if it's a good salary for Melbourne I'm afraid as we live in SA and I know that housing etc is cheaper here. We manage just fine on approx $60k.

Re: the official jobs/wages thread...
Wonder if anyone can help.
I currently work as an ICT techncian within primary schools in UK.
Any idea of salary in Adelaide? Not fussed about sticking to education, but this is where my experience has been.
Any ideas if this is a govt job in Adelaide, or service provided by 3rd party?
In UK i work for a company who supports 90 schools, and wondered if this is same in Oz, or is it govt only???
any help gratefully received.
Tracey

Hi,
I'm not too sure about joiners as my OH is an Electrician, but yes we have had a bit of a time of it. Although we are quite lucky that I knew all this before we came so made sure we had enough cash to last at least a year.
He has had t apply to the TRA for an Australian Recognised Trades Certificate (ARTC) then enrol in a course to pass the wiring rules exam. Once he's done that we can then apply for a full licence.
I'm not sure of the process for Joiners, so what you should do is contact the TRA and they will tell you what you need to do once you get here, based on where you are going. The rules vary from state to state, so far South Australia seems to be the easiest.
You can contact the TRA by visiting this webpage
It's not as bad as it sounds, providing you are prepared for it

OH is a design engineer, primarily in Catia, for things such as aircraft vehicles satalites, air filters, tanks etc. Has mechanical engineering experience and HNC and a little production engineering.
How easily would he be able to move over to one of the higher demand sectors such as building, water, oil, mining etc?
Or anyone know of any companies using his current skills QLD or Adelaide would be first choices.
got a shortish 457 in QLD lined up but need to get a fix on getting a PR asap

Pay in WA would be at least $70/hr or $145kpa. In Qld it would maybe slightly less.
Good luck.

Thanks Amazulu
Are you, or someone you know, in the engineering industry? It's being given the opportunity to cross into a sector with no experience that concerns us

I'm in electrical engineering design in the mining industry. I had no mining experience before I came here. Lack of previous experience is not an issue as they are desperate for skilled guys who have ANY experience.
