Hi all,
I need some info on a job I have been offered down under ( melbourne area) as a service technician

$60000 start pay- is this enough to live on(family of five with savings) ?
company car- do you get taxed more like the uk ?
20 days holiday - is this the norm ?
plus other benefits

any advice would be great

cheers

20 days leave is the norm.

Family income of $60,000 to support 5 people. Personally, I think that's tight.

Company cars do get taxed. See http://www.ato.gov.au/

We can manage on about that much - but we are only 4 and have a very small mortgage. Not enough for luxuries or flash holidays - but we live well enough :)

A Service tech in what trade and what will you be servicing? The reason i ask is that tradespeople are very difficult to find in Oz and $60K seems a bit on the low side. Are you here yet? If not it is probably worth waiting until you are here and sussing out the job market, tradespeople can generally, to a degree name their price at the moment especially in Sydney and Brisbane, not really sure about Melbourne. [URL="http://www.seek.com.au"] has a wage thingy on which you can check out the lowest, average and highest wage paid for your job, it might be worth checking it out. I think $60k for a fam of five will be a hard ask.

I will be a HVAC BMS controls service tech we thought that as they are paying for all the costs of moving and giving us 6 weeks accomodation to settle in it might be worth it.
and once I am there I can I have a good look around for other jobs.
what do you think?

Will or how long would you be tied to this company?
What sort of visa would they offer?
Is the $60K inclusive or before 9% Super contribution?
What area of Melbourne would you be based? Do you need to travel - in line with them giving you a company car? Petrol or travel allowance? The further you travel the less FBT you are liable for.
Was it your intention before the offer to come to Melbourne? In a medium term it might work out worth your while as it gets you here, with employment ie a 18 month time frame to get established even if just breaking even.

I already have my 136 general skilled visa as for being tied in after the first year I have to pay back 75% after 2 none of it
It is $60k plus 9% super
$2000 private medical
company car all petrol paid for.
total package valued at $85000
the company is based in box hill vic
not sure of the area I will be required to travel
they have also promised to promote me to engineer once they have assessed my skill.
we were always planning to go to melbourne or adelaide.
its just a bit daunting excepting a job not knowing much of whats on offer in melbourne

You should manage to locate a reasonable rental within easy commute of Boxhill. Lower income means lower tax and if you have kids you maybe entitiled to some benefits through Centrelink.

As others have said it would be initial tight but considering they are paying for the cost of the move (even tieing you in for 2 years - Gross that up and its not that bad a package).

Check out rentals on http://www.domain.com.au/Public/Sear...sort=price-asc

Boxhill is 3128 (postal code)

The ATO website as mentioned by other posters will help you work out your net and tax consequences of motor vehicle.

You will have to do a search for Centrelink as have not dealt with them myself.

For local info suggest you signup with the Britvics crowd:
