Let's hope they do a better job than Hilarys boat harbour which I think is a total craphole.

Well, it's far enough from my house to not have to worry about all the anti-social behaviour that it will cause but it's sort of near enough (3 Km) for me to walk or cycle home from after a few quiet drinks, so on balance I think it's a good thing.

Cool. It will be a good development if they don't repeat the mistakes of Hilarys.

It would be, I heard they can take your car license away for drunk cycling, which is a bit unfair IMO

Hillarys is the only decent beachside venue in the whole of the Northern Suburbs (2nd biggest tourist spot in Perth), although better in the winter when the tourists have gone home. The new Breakwater Tavern is ace. New BBQ areas are great.

Can't see how Hillarys is a 'mistake', only for that crappy arcade, summer fair and too many kangaroo tourist shops. There's enough 'unspoilt beaches' along the Northern Suburbs if you don't like Hillarys.

Mindarie on the other hand is a white elephant. Went there a couple of months ago to The Boat on a Saturday night and it was like Blackpool with all the regional English accents, didn't hear one Australian accent. Shops/cafe/bar choice was poor.

Let's hope Ocean Reef will be as successful as Hillarys. Great for local employment and business opportunities. :fingerscrossed:

I don't like that area in general but that's another story, I was referring to HBH only. It has too many overpriced fish and chip shops, too many crappy souvenir shops. Granted, I have not been to the new Breakwater but the old one was shite.

I don't like the place and cannot see the appeal of it. OR will be a chance to do a better job.

One of my friends is heavily involved in the scheme and was instrumental in presenting to council last night. The marina is going to be nothing like Hillarys. Sea sports will be the main focus and it will not have the retail facilities that Hillarys has.

Zulu, personally I don't like the new Breakwater. Too modern and $19.50 for a glass of white wine and a pint of James Squire was way too pricey for me.

Re: Ocean Reef Marina

Agreed, the Breakwater is pricey but nice to be able to go to a bar/restaurant and not feel overdressed on the odd occassion. It makes a change from all the Aussie casual dress places that are here in abundant, Perth NOR.

If I feel like a cheap boozy night out then you can't beat a good old BYO with cheap corkage, one of the great pluses in Perth. Alcohol prices are shocking in all bars/pubs here.

Glad Ocean Reef is going to be developed into something different from Hillarys and Mindarie marina, the more diverse the better for the people of Perth. Something to keep all interested and entertained.

Hilarys is mainly geared for the tourists ! It brings the money in, as its very popular !
