Default Obsession with St Patrick?

I know today is St Patrick's Day, and I know even back in the UK it was a good excuse for getting pi**ed, but why are the Aussies so obsessed with it? The office was full of Aussies dressed in green (not for charity, just for St Patrick) most of them without an Irish ancestor anywhere!

I said I had no Irish rellies, and preferred to celebrate St David's Day - when I hung the flag up for that I just got weird looks from everyone.

Is St Patrick also the patron saint of Oz? If not, who is?? I just asked The Bloke, he thought for a while, watched 5 minutes of the Simpsons, then suggested "Skippy?"

Sort of question Megalania will answer before I pick up my beer I guess.......

Weird, isn't it. There was even a guy at work trying to dye his beard green!

same here- people in green all over town drinking!

just scooted up the supermarket and the cash out girls were admiring a certificate they got for being the best dressed team for St Patricks Day!

We only celebrate it in my family as it is my Grandma Patricia's birthday!
