Here is a list of the best NZ websites I know of...
(I may be a tad sad):

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/
NZ Herald - very good news & info

http://www.autopoint.co.nz/marketplace/UsedCarHome.asp
Bit like the Autotrader also links to Boat Trader and Farm(!!!) trader

www.open2view.com
Simply the best real estate website I've ever seen!

http://www.ljhooker.co.nz/
Another Real estate webs site - has more rental content than Open2View but not as good.

http://www.accessnz.co.nz/
NZ Search engine (1497 shopping links - should help you out).

http://www.woolworths.co.nz/
And Woolworths is a good supermarket type site that links to a few supermarkets in the Woolies chain... as well as the Woolworths home shopping site.

Hope it helps.

If any one knows of a good real estate web site that carries pics of rental property I'd love to know!

Sorry no Argos type stores in New Zealand. Pity really. If I was you I'd cancel your plans because without Argos life won't be worth living.

(only joking - been away for a while and just getting into the negativity that seems so prevalent)

Sorry to hear you're not feeling ticketyboo. Actually I can easily live without Argos or any other retailer...it'll save me a fortune if nothing else. Actually I'm starting a business and need to cost some things out.

My thanks for everyone's suggestions. Appreciate it.

For electrical and appliances try
www.noelleeming.co.nz or
www.dse.co.nz/. For DIY and household try
www.mitre10.co.nz/. For household and gifts
try http://www.acq.co.nz/main.asp. For
food try https://www.wo-
olworths.co.nz/homeshopping/default.asp

Briscoes and The Warehouse are good for general household stuff but they don't seem
to have prices on their websites. If you need prices of anything specific perhaps
someone on this NG in NZ could oblige?

Ben

Thanks for the thought Ian but at the moment it's taking my mind off the mother-in-law visiting on wednesday and she wants to go to Eden and it's a hellish drive!
Something you could help with though is to do with rental properties. Someone mentioned that its not a usual thing to have furnished properties - would that just be Akl or a general NZ thing? (sorry can't remember where you said you were but I'm looking at C/Church who I guess will take their lead from Akl!).
Thanks Pat.

Hi Pat, I'm up in Rotorua. Nearly all the rentals we looked at had only a cooker or a
cooker and a fridge. Seems to be a common thing. You can find, in the big cities,
serviced apartments, but these are hellishly expensive. We booked a holiday home
which was a fair old drive from my work (especially as at the time we had only one
car). It had everything (especially essentials like a TV to keep the kids from
killing each other) This site
http://www.bluepenguin.co.nz/ has holiday
rentals (but is mainly North Island). We found ours by chance. I sent e-mails to all
the holiday parks asking if they could offer us a discount rate for a 6 - 8 week
rental (especially as it was out of season). One of them passed the e-mail to the
owner of our rental, who was a fellow Brit, and he was great - milk, bread, eggs,
bacon, butter in the fridge, a jar of coffee, even transferred the phone line to us
so we could benefit from cheaper rates.

For things you might need (e.g. tools) much of this can be got at garage sales or
auctions - there are loads! Also have a look on
www.trademe.co.nz

For cars see www.turners.co.nz (auction site -
also do weird things like bankrupt businesses)

I've got a copy of The Christchurch Press (is it press or post, can't remember offhand? - anyway the local paper) and under the rental section, although the majority are unfurnished there are quite a number of properties on offer furnished, so it won't be an impossible task.

Hi Lizzie,
how on earth did yo get hold of that???

Something I have been trying to find out concerns pets. Primarily two dopey spaniels that will be coming with us. I haven't found anywhere yet that says '...pets welcome...' not house/flat rentals, holiday accom, motels or campgrounds. Is it an unstated thing that you just ask or do you think coz they don't mention it, don't bother asking. I was impressed with Canadas laws regarding this, its very open and there are even websites for a pet friendly hotels etc.
Any thoughts, ideas or websites would be really helpful.
Thanks, Pat.
