NZ versus Aus

Hi,
We are the Bryar family and until recently were looking at emigrating to NZ. But it seems the more we have looked into it and read on the forum the more a daunting prospect it has seemed ie the lower wages and higher cost of living. We are now looking at Aus and would like anybodys input of why we should choose it before NZ.

The sheep sleep easier at night in Oz:rofl:

In all seriousness if you can get around to look at both places it would be helpful in making an informed choice. We considered NZ however work prospects and earnings stopped us even going for a reckie. Oz has similar opportunities in many fields with comparative salaries to the UK this to me makes it more attractive than NZ.

The answer to this may give you an idea...

How many Australians move to NZ as new residents ? 4 in 2008-09
v
How many New Zealanders move to Australia as new residents? 25,000 in 2008-09

That figure of '4' is from the NZ stats. It also shows that 9,000 British moved to NZ in that year, compared to the 21,000 British that moved to Australia.

Many Australians go to NZ on holiday though... 835,000 in 2008-09
;)

Australia = 1st world country
New Zealand = 3rd world country

One of the biggest advantages of not living in NZ is that your kids won't grow up with that wanker Kiwi accent.

If your highly skilled professional then Living in New Zealand is actually far more comfortable. If your just filling a skill shortage in this country well New Zealand can be unaffordable but having said that unless you earning big bucks here as well you'll struggle.

I've never looked at New Zealand statistics before, but did so just now.

From the official NZ Immigration stats:

Permanent and long-term migration

Figures to/from Australia

2000 to 2010
  • 94,102 Arrivals
  • 336,930 Departures
Net result of 242,828 left to become Australian.

Interesting stuff. Have you got any figures there for NZ's population growth / decline over the same period?

Maybe ask why so many NZ's immigrate to OZ and not many Aussies immigrate to NZ. If NZ was a better place to live it would be the reverse.

There are many factors, New Zealand is very small in population, only 3 million...smaller than London! remote and very quiet therefore obviously job opportunities are less... However its stunning, and the people are far friendlier in my opinion..

A new website, for me to do, springs to mind ...

New Zealand Population:
  • 2000 3,855,900
  • 2001 3,876,900 up 21,000 0.54%
  • 2002 3,935,700 up 58,800 1.52%
  • 2003 4,013,300 up 77,600 1.97%
  • 2004 4,078,700 up 65,400 1.63%
  • 2005 4,126,600 up 47,900 1.17%
  • 2006 4,176,100 up 49,500 1.20%
  • 2007 4,222,700 up 46,600 1.12%
  • 2008 4,263,600 up 40,900 0.97%
  • 2009 4,305,700 up 42,100 0.99%
  • 2010 4,362,000 up 56,300 1.31%

The numbers arriving from Asia, America and Africa are almost the same as those leaving for Australia.
eg:
2009
22,651 arrived from Asia, America and Africa
26,906 left for Australia
