'Permanent and long-term (PLT) arrivals exceeded departures by 1,900 in June 2002, compared with a net inflow of 300 in the previous June month. There were 1,500 more PLT arrivals, and 100 fewer PLT departures in June 2002, compared with June 2001. There were net gains from China (1,000), and India (600), but a net outflow to Australia (1,200).
PLT arrivals of New Zealand citizens in June 2002 were up 200 (or 10 percent) on June 2001, while PLT arrivals of non-New Zealand citizens were up 1,300 (or 34 percent). New Zealand citizen departures were down 100 (or 4 percent).
There were 92,700 PLT arrivals in the year ended June 2002, up 23,200 (or 33 percent) on the June 2001 year. In contrast, there were 18,900 (or 24 percent) fewer PLT departures in 2002. The overall result was a net migration gain of 32,800, compared with a net outflow of 9,300 in the previous year. The net gain for the June 2002 year, which was the highest recorded net inflow for any year, was 2,400 more than the combined net outflows for the previous three years.
There were net inflows from China (13,800), India (5,800), the United Kingdom (4,900), South Africa (3,200), Fiji (2,400), and Japan (2,300), in the year ended June 2002. Conversely, there was a net outflow to Australia of 13,700, less than half the net outflow of 31,000 in the June 2001 year.
New Zealand citizen PLT arrivals were up by 3,600 (to 25,000), and non-New Zealand citizen PLT arrivals were up by 19,500 (to 67,700) in the June 2002 year, compared with the June 2001 year. There were also PLT departures of 44,900 New Zealand citizens (down 18,400), and 15,000 non-New Zealand citizens (down 500). The result was a net PLT outflow of 19,900 New Zealand citizens, and a net PLT inflow of 52,700 non-New Zealand citizens in the June 2002 year.'
