Default Nursing Shifts

Hiya,

Just wondered what the shift patterns are like in Oz. Are they mainly 7.5 hours consisting of early/lates or 11.5 long days ?

By the way I'll be working in SCBU/Paediatrics most probably.

Cheers,

Siobhan.

Hi Siobhan, I am working in theatres and we work 07.00-13.30 and 13.00-22.30, we can also do 10 hour and 12 hours, pretty flexible in all hospitals I think . Which city are you going to be working?

Hi, I'm in Brisbane on the wards and we work 0700-1530 and 1430-2300.The are also short shifts 1700-2100 and 0700-1100.Management seem pretty relaxed in fitting in child friendly shifts, we also have staff who just work lates etc. hope this helps.Katie.

Thanks for all your replies - they were really helpful :-)

I'm intending on getting a Working Holiday Visa and then either getting sponsership or applying for PR...

Thinking of working in Perth or Melbourne if I apply for PR and Sydney/Melbourne and Perth when I go on a WHV.

I'm also in a bit of a dilema...I'm child branch trained but i'm doing the adult branch degree part time with a view of doing the 18mth midwifery course at some time in the future.

Should I do the midwifery course here in the UK or in Australia once I've got PR?

Thanks for your help :-)

If you wish to pay for your course do it here there is no free training or paid time off in Australia so keep that in mind plus you get a higher level of training in the UK.

I don't like the look of those late shifts.
I thought it was bad enough having to work until 21.15hrs here in the UK.
The night shift looks the best bet.
23.00-07.00hrs 9 (cushy).
Do you know if you get enhancements for night shifts.
And is PB correct in saying if you are off sick you don't get paid?

Thanks
Di

You get 2 weeks a year sick money , good deal or what?
Night shift 17% , afternoons 15% and weekends 50% and 75% .
You could be asked to fill in on night shift.

Registered
Nurse(WA) Rates of pay Public sector
Effective 2.05.03
Please note – wages quoted in the table below are the weekly wages
for a nurse working full time and do not include shift penalty rates.

Level 1.1 713.30
Level 1.2 746.10
Level 1.3 779.20
Level 1.4 812.00
Level 1.5 845.00
Level 1.6 877.90
Level 1.7 910.70
Level 1.8 927.00
Level 1.9 942.60

Shift penalty rates:

SATURDAY SUNDAY AFTERNOON SHIFTS NIGHT DUTY

Not bad enhancements really.Especially if you look at the new pay structure for UK(Agenda for change). Looks like we could be losing out on our unsocial hours payments

According to someone at the NBWA it goes on how long you have been qualified. I've been told that with 10yrs experience I would be a 1:9.
Hope this helps

I would say probably around top end of level 1.
I too am an E grade and I am hoping for 1:9
As Claire says they tend to go off the number of years you have been qualified.
Hope this helps

I've been in the rotten job for 10 yrs too, and have also been told grade 1.9. At the minute i'm in the private sector and only get 2 weeks sick and no weekend or unsocial hours, so i reckon i must be on a better thing over there.

Hi Mandy

I worked in the private sector for approx 8yrs and if you didn't work then you didn't get paid.
Same rates of pay applied for nights and weekends although we did get double time for bank holidays.WOW.
Apparently if you work in the private hospitals in OZ it is better pay!
