Nursing Registration & IELTS
Hi, I have my permanent residency and now I am applying for nurse registration in Western Australia. Apparently ALL nurses wishing to register now have to complete the above despite it not being the case when I applied for my visa. I think this is just a money making task ($300+), I do agree with the fact that english testing need's to be done as I have encountered quite a few nurses in the past who can't string a sentence together. However, surely this is ridiculous for those born in the UK, stayed there all there life and completed all of there education in the UK. What a joke. Anyway better go and write a reluctant cheque in the region of $300+

Re: Nursing Registration & IELTS
Hi,
There are lots of threads running on IELTS in the nurses section on here and also on PIO. They are quite heated on PIO, lots of nurses feel the same. They feel its a con (IELTS), I am trying my best to look at it as a means to and end. Just need the end! Good luck C |

Re: Nursing Registration & IELTS
I have yet to hear/read a strong argument for the taking of IETLS by a person who's first language is english, has lived in an english speaking country all of their life, been educated to degree level in english and also has a PR visa on a positive skills assessment as a nurse from the Australian government. Has worked as a nurse for x amount of years and wants to move to a country whose first language is english. Yet cannot practice as a nurse unless they pass the higher academic IELTS and score band 7 across the board ?
As I have said before. I would quite happy sit an exam on nursing ethics, clinical reasoning and jugement, drip rates, pharmacology etc, but please don't ask me about the optical flying lens of a bumble bee and expect me to keep a straight face! Not having a go, just pointing out some facts that many, many nurses find themselves questioning the reason behind the IELTS. Did I mention the cost of £110 ? Anything else I have missed ? Not moaning you understand. C |
Re: Nursing Registration & IELTS
Would it not cost the Australian govt a lot of money to prove you fell in a category where testing of english was not necessary? There would have to be a lot of categories of degrees and other things that proved that you sitting the test was a waste of time but for someone else it was necessary. They would have to check the evidence you produced etc. They would also have to work this out for every other english speaking country in the world. It would probably have to be extended to non english speaking countries where people could prove it was ridiculous to test them too. Frankly I don't see how it could be done without charging you $2000 to cover the administration :)
I have heard quite a few nurses on here comment that some of their colleagues english was not up to scratch... |

I have heard quite a few nurses on here comment that some of their colleagues english was not up to scratch... However, I have the visa (2008) been through the skills assessment, which is very in depth, as it should be. They have seen the course I studied, in english, the degree and diplomas I have. All in english. They have assessed the evidence I have produced already. I can go to Australia tomorrow and work, but not as a nurse, they very thing I was given the visa for. I sat the IELTS last Saturday. Results in around the 21 MAY :fingerscrossed: I don't want to come across as too big for my boots. However, stand by all I say. C |

Re: Nursing Registration & IELTS
Overseas nurses (non EU) wishing to register with the NMC also have to complete the IELTS. Why should it be any different for nurses coming from the UK to Aus?
It is a standard put in place to safeguard patients. Isn't that we are all about? |
