Lol... oh dear. I reckon they made the uniform lousy to stop the patients temperatures rising. They'll be hot enough in this weather

The uniforms are foul! At our hospital we call it the 'tampon box' outfit because it appears to have been modelled on a brand of tampons.

Could someone please post up the UK Equivalent of the following please.

It's an "average" payscale for a nurse here in Aussie.

You never know it could come in useful for me, If god forbid my wife has to become the fulltime breadwinner, and the UK version pays a lot more ?

Seems to be a lot more casual work for some one like myself in the UK, and now we are well and truly established here, (can leave everything for our retirement etc) and work conditions are going down the slush shute for full time government workers like myself. I'd like to have a comparison and 'earnings' escape route.

Nurses in Australia are highly valued members of the community and, as such, are remunerated very well. For example, a Registered General Nurse with eights years of post-graduate experience would earn between $32 and $51 per hour.

Don't know where they get their figures from. I posted a link on the nurses forum to payscales a few months ago. Don't know where it is now. Have tried searching and can't find it. But, in Queensland a Registered General Nurse with 8yr post-grad experience would earn $25.9566. You would not hit $32 per our until you are 4 yrs into a level 3 job (Unit Manager). As for $51 - a level 7 (highest you can get in nursing) gets $47.07

I can't believe there is that much variation between the states.

They would be taking into account penalty rates, public holidays sundays, night shift etc, not flat rates of pay Plenty of Nurses in Melbourne, choose to work exclusively "agency" night shift to take advantage of the high rates. Plus there are always shifts available.

PS.... For the higher rates, add the word "agency" to nurses in the search engine.

I would like a link to the UK rates if anyone has one please.

Following are some Flat rates of pay, from the Territory It should be a good indicator of government, non agency jobs and rates, and should be considered the minimum rates.

I suspect that some migrant nurses, could well be being paid underaward rates, by unscrupulous employers seeking nurses from Overseas.

Thank you for your reply & Hi!
How is Melbourne? My hubbie went out for a short visit to check it out, and was really positive. I have only visited 12 years ago, and of course didn't think that we would be looking to emigrate there! My brother is an Aussie Citizen living in Bentleigh, and Steve (hubbie) liked the bay area. We have 2 boys age 3 & 6 who are sports mad, so Australia seems like the right place.

The idea is I could get work - hopefully quite quickly to keep us afloat, until Steve gets sorted. Do some of the nurses apply from the UK? I am a gynae/Infertility nurse - who had my heart set on the Royal Women's Hosp.
It's really hard to judge whether we are being realistic or unrealistic with our dreams. We haven't even applied yet - as we are trying to find an assuror for the financial assurance of support - very frustrating!

Any info would be gratefully received! Thank you!

Have you looked at the Monash Medical Centre website?? they have a large fertility centre there, and it would not be far from Bentleigh in terms of working there. It is a large hospital with many specialties and well regarded in the medical field, so I would look into MMC, also, Sandringham hospital has a good maternity section as well as some smaller wards, which may be worth looking in to for agency shifts. I am casually employed(Nurse Bank) in two hospitals and am turning work down left, right and centre at the moment. My wages very from $33 an hour on weekdays to $49 at weekends. I am grade 2 year 9 and would recommend you bring over any certificates of employment to verify your years of experience, unlike the UK, Australia does recognise prior service, I had 11 years of ICU and UK would only start me at D grade!! On top of wages, you also get another about $18 for working an afternoon shift, and not sure about the night shift penalties as I don't work them. Most nurses that are grade 2yr9 and work fulltime(nights included) usually earn around $70-80K after penalties i believe. Along with this, if working in the public system, we can salary package, which increases your pay by around 10K, and is well worth it, most things can be packaged, entertainment, mortgate, personal travel, credit cards, utility bills, school fees, so it is worth it
hope this helps

Ahh someone that is saying similar to my wifes earnings, at the Royal Melbourne group. My wife is also on the bank, and works out west sometimes under the Royal Melbourne Pschy umbrella.

Jodes are the wages lower than the UK (bearing in mind, my wife is 100 pct aussie and never worked as a nurse in the UK)

??

Sorry Ozzie

As a MH nurse specialising in CBT I just could not work that way. Nor could anyone who is at all career minded.

I work with people with severe depression using CBT and I often am involved for a year or more.....How can you do that on a casual basis?

It may be OK to work casually in surgical or acute units but surely not in MH

It is no wonder the MH services have such problems if that is the case.
